About Rennaisance standards of beauty--most American women weight at least as much if not more than the Reubenesque models of the 17th century. But then those models were unrealistically heavy for women of the 17th century. I think beauty is simply whatever takes effort and money at any one point in time. That's why the Chinese bound little girls' feet, why Middle Easterners favor restrictive clothing, why being pale was fashionable in Europe (because it meant you didn't do any menial labor that would give you a tan), but now it's being tanned that's sexy (because you can afford a holiday in the sun).

Woman have been made secondary class citizens not by those adverts but by the chains that have been forged upon us from the day the doctor declared that a daughter has been born.

I suggest you reread the beginning of the post and concentrate on the context I placed the hypersexualizing........to reiterate I said ,"in the ad world, a woman...."

I remember reading somewhere not long ago that most young girls in the UK aspire to becoming glamour girls because of the exposure and glamorizing of sl**ts get in the media.

 

I believe that ads, MTV and porn all contribute to the formation of disrespectful ideas about women and womanhood. A few years ago, during the Abu Guraib photo scandal,

Some very disturbing image of what was said to be the abuse faced by Iraqi female prisoners (use your imagination!) was doing the rounds on the net. This was obviously met with great anger from many of those who have seen it. However, it soon emerged that those weren't real photos but rather excerpts of porn videos. There’s actually whole genre that caters for such fetishes. What I question is, why would any one produce such inhumane films and call it entertainment and can a country that legalizes the production of such videos and call itself civilized?
