Writing:Af-Somali for those who need to Learn?

Recommended Posts

AWESOME OG_GIRL!

now for CHECKMATE, u didn't translate those words OG_MOTI posted, u just jumped into sentences, we need to understand, remember.

i have more questions, when reading the words,

aa= a a? or just a long a sound? or is there sort of c in it?

another thing, is the dh=dha in the arabic letters, is that correct?

and since i don't know the words up there, i'll contribute to this, whoever knows it, it will be awesome! haha

Caambabuurkaa

NGONGE

Cant contribute personally as i dont have the vocabulary nor ability to construct a sentence.

You came to the right place then! Give it a try, make up a sentence of your own. My Somali is not the best in the world but I have perfected the Waji Loox (wooden face) style of speaking and writing Somali. If I make a mistake people either correct me or laugh (sometimes both). When they correct me they do me a favour and when they laugh my Waji Loox comes into play and I keep plugging on, ma garatay?

Always remember though, language is nothing but a form of communication; if your aim is to become a poet then maybe you’ll need to work on your sentence construction and vocabulary. However, if your aim is only to communicate and get people to understand you, as a start, broken Somali should not be a problem.

You should see me when I’m speaking to my Chinese friends, in Cantonese; hung mung jung baaah ** Waji Loox frown **

Ok, after 2 hours searching google.com I found some thing will help us :

The Somali Language

The Sound System and Pronunciation

Somali uses all but three letters (p, v, and z) of the English alphabet. Of the thirty-three sounds, fifteen (b, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, s, sh, t, w, and y) are very much like their English counterparts.

Somali has seven consonants (c, dh, kh, q, r, x and ' [glottal stop]) that do not match anything in English. The English sounds most likely to present difficulties for Somalis are those represented by the letters c, q, r, and x, since these letters are pronounced quite differently in Somali. For pronunciation of Somali letters.

In Somali, the consonants b, d, dh, g, l, m, n, and r can be doubled to indicate a sound which is pronounced with much more force than its single counterpart. Thus, Somalis often pronounce the doubled consonants in English words such as "bigger," "middle," "merry," "simmer," and "nibble" with more strength than they would be pronounced by a native speaker of English.

Vowels always have fixed value in Somali; each letter has one sound and each sound has one letter.

Long vowels (aa, ee, ii, oo, uu) are used in Somali and pronounced about twice as long as a single counterpart.

There is still Juxa's word did not answer ..I don't know hope others will answer.

Salam

Yeah Em you're right I've eaten Liver before.

But it's understandable why she got it wrong, somalis generally associate liver with love instead of the heart. Why that is, is beyond me!!
