General Duke

Hussein Samatar of Minneapolis is the first Somali to be elected to public office

^^ Duke's second article explains his reasons for asking to be referred to as 'African' and not just Somali. One should not read too much into it. Anyway, what is this School Board thing? Is it like English School Governors?

NG,

I don't know what English School Governors do, but here in America, the Board of Education decides where, what and which school money is spent on.

Somalina

^Congrats to the Somali brother indeed!

FYI: he is not the first Somali immigrant elected to public office in the USA, there was a Somali lady that was elected to Seattle's (Washington) school board 7 or 9 years ago.

A former Torontonian weliba and and err never mind :D

Great news indeed. Samatar is a hard worker.

He is the founder of the largest small business lender in Minneapolis. This guy has given out more loans than you could imagine. Truck drivers, shop owners, and ambitious Africans/Somalis with an idea shows up at his door looking for a loan or help.

In my opinion, the school board position is a "get-your-foot-in-first" sort of an attempt to further his career in public office. His current position as the founder and executive director of ADC is much more exciting than the school board trustee position.
