HORN OF AFRICA COURSE IN HARGEISA - APPLICATION DEADLINE 31 JULY

The Rift Valley Institute's new Horn of Africa Course will take place in Hargeisa, Somaliland, from 11 to 17 October 2008. Modelled on the successful RVI Sudan course, this new Course is a high-level, intensive programme that covers the Horn of Africa's: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland. The syllabus spans the history, culture, economics and politics of the region, from rock paintings and khat to pastoralism, national elections and foreign interventions.

 

Teaching staff on the course are distinguished academics and civil society activists from the region and international experts. They include:

 

 

Dekha Ibrahim, civil society activist and winner of the Right Livelihood Award (2007)

 

Lee Cassanelli, author of "The Shaping of Somali Society"

Sally Healy, Research Fellow, Chatham House, London (formerly of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office)

Sada Mire, Institute of Archaeology, London

Terence Lyons, author of "Avoiding Conflict in the Horn of Africa"

Ezekiel Gebissa, author of "The Leaf of Allah: Khat and Agricultural Transformation in Harherge, Ethiopia" and Editor of the Journal of Oromo Studies

Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, Director of the Center for Research and Dialogue, Mogadishu

Kjetil Tronvoll, University of Oslo, co-editor of "Brothers At War: Making Sense of the Eritrean-Ethiopian War"

 

The course director is Mark Bradbury, author of "Becoming Somaliland". The Director of Studies is Ken Menkhaus of Davidson College, author of "The Somali Crisis: Tragedy in Five Acts."
