Posted April 2, 2018 African Union Mission In Somalia (AMISOM) on Monday said its troop killed 30 Al-Shabaab militants in Lower Shabelle region following simultaneous attacks on three of the Mission’s Forward Operating Bases. In a statement, AMISOM said its forces repulsed the attacks on its bases in Quoryole, Bulomareer, and Golwein town. “The troops fought off and successfully repulsed the terrorists who had launched simultaneous attacks on Forward Operating Bases in Quoryole, Bulomareer, and Golwein. The militants were dealt a heavy blow, with at least 30 of them put out of action, following the intense fighting. Eight vehicles which ferried the terrorists, including two Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices, were destroyed and an assortment of weapons recovered,” said AMISOM in the statement. The Mission noted that it lost four of its soldiers as six others were injured during the battle. “AMISOM pays tribute to these troops whose courage and sacrifice has frustrated Al-Shabaab’s intent. We honour our brave soldiers, who are resolute in continuing to neutralize the insurgents in order to restore peace and stability in Somalia,” the statement praised. Four rifles, two Rocket Propelled Guns, two Recoilless Guns, a Walkie Talkie and 18 Sub Machine Gun Rifles were recovered, according to the government of Uganda which its forces were involving the battle with militants. Ugandan army spokesman Brigadier Richard Karemire wrote on Twitter that 30 Shabaab militants had been killed. Uganda government was the first East African country to send its troops to Somalia in 2007 to support Somalia’s weak internationally recognized government.
