Mother keeps house despite kidnap fraud

A mother-of-five who was moved up a council

housing list after fraudulently claiming she had been kidnapped has walked free from court and been allowed to stay in the house.

 

Yurup Ismael, 48, of Harrow, north west London, told police that her former husband had abducted her and made her 16-year-old son back up her story.

 

Harrow Crown Court heard that police spent £20,000 investigating her claims but soon realised that she was lying as her alleged kidnapper was already in prison serving a sentence for assault.

 

She later admitted she had not seen him since 2003.

 

But because of the alleged threat to her safety she and her children were moved up the Harrow Council housing list and quickly moved to a bigger house.

 

Yesterday she admitted perverting the course of justice and fraud by false representation but her eight month sentence was suspended because she has to look after five children.

 

She also continues to live in the house in College Hill Road in Harrow.

 

Because it is a Housing Association property the council is powerless to evict her.

 

In a basis of plea statement, which was read to the court, she admitted: “I … accept that I lied with the intent to get a new house for me and my children.

 

“I did not lie with the intent of gaining a bigger property, I just wanted to be safer. I accept however that I did benefit in that the new property is bigger.”

 

Recorder David Halpern QC, sentencing, told her that while it had not been proved that she lied specifically to get a bigger house: “You hoped that your lies would result in the council finding you other housing and you were successful in that and thereby deprived another family of housing.”

 

Cllr Bob Currie, portfolio holder for housing on Harrow Council, said: “This was a shocking attempt to jump the housing queue and it has proved very costly.

 

“The Council’s housing department was in the process of helping her family move to a more suitable home.

 

“She wasted around £20,000 of public money on the police investigation.

 

“It also took a home away from a family in real need and that is something we simply will not allow when there are so many genuine people patiently waiting for an affordable home.”
