I'm not really crazy on Arabic songs, though the beat on some of them sends me into a fantasy in which I have mastered belly dancing.

There is this one song though, which I really liked when I first heard it (and bothered memorising its name). Youm wara youm by a Samira something, featuring a Cheb something (I think). It has a nice melody, very upbeat and I found the lyrics and their English translation succesfully!

I have gone off it since then, after overplaying it. :(

I am still to enjoy Abdel Halim Hafiz..must be all those 60's movies of him in the beach in bright shorts that I only remember when i thnk of him...but never say never, I finally had the sense to understand what Fayrouz and Umm Kalthum are saying, so he's probably next lol

Pucca, whose tamer hosni? never heard of him. interesting. should 6arab.com search him.

Magnoona...was Asalah's best song ever...until..

ma abash ana...the video for this song was simply HOT and the song is so strong..

What compels people to go to 6arab or musicoflebanon or such similar sights to borrow song and artist names so they can write it here when they can barely understand the language. Ofcourse this directed at some people who posted and not others.......The only time I was curious of anything arabian was when I was told that Abdel Halim Hafez was a heart throb to the point that when he died many Egyptian women committed suicide by throwing themselves in the Nile...they probably used other means to commit suicide too but that was enough to make go I must see the work of this man! I wouldn't say I listen to his songs but the couple of black and white movies of his that I saw were off the hook. What do I have against Arabic music??? Amr Diab that is what! When this old cow retires and stops acting so new age and the countless fans stop swooning over him because he is sooo played out I might have some hope that arabic music is for me. Sorry nomads I just like to express my self.

Do you have to understand the language, to enjoy a good tune?

Nope.

However, I cannot deny..over the years Amr Diab hasn't been doing well, however the Amr Diab of the late 90's woowow..was something else...

Mustapha Amar anyone?

Justice, arabic is a very beautiful language Masha allah. Maybe you can post up some of your choices so we can all see them.

On a more selfish note I dedicate Cheb Khaled's song Didi to myself. I believe this was an early nineties hit?

It is very sad for people that listen to arabic music just for the tunes because they don't get to enjoy it fully as they do not understand the meaning. Imagine a person listening to a love song (Arabic songs are predominantly love songs, some patriotic, folk etc. etc. but predominantly love)and they don't fully grasp the meaning! This is indeed a travesty of all true appreciators of Arabic songs.

Didikong, what a pleasent life you lead, if not understanding arabic songs is a travesty!

Do you hve to understand what nancy or amr diab when they sing about love? no, lets be serious

Do you have to understand kathem al saher when he sings Layla, it would be nice, if u could, however a true singer (as is my kazumi) would be able to show the emotion and weight of the song, through his voice.

Case Closed.

Had to bring this super thread back! Anyone falling in love with Asalah's last album? Specially the song Aktthar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDve4HYlnJg (the video)

Any other good songs?

Plus found this hysterical translation of Layla by Kathem El Saher

Its long ofcourse, but seriously shouldn't translate somethings.

Layla

Matat be mehrabi einaiki ibtihalati.

My entreaties died in the caverns of your eyes.

Wa estaslamat le reyahi al yaas rayati.

And my flags surrendered to the winds of despair.

Jafaat ala babiki el mawsood azminati.

My days escaped to find your door closed.

Layla.

Layla

Wa ma athmarat shayan nidaati?

And what transpired with the object of my cries?

Aamani ma rafani lahnon ala watarin.

Two years and she didn't hear the melody of my strings...

Wala istifaqat ala noorin samawati.

And she didn't the see light of my sky.

Wa atiqol hob fi qalbi wa asooroho. Fa arshifol hama.

I freed the love in my heart and squeezed it...Then I drank grief

Fi moghbar kasati.

From a dirty chalice.

Momazakoon ana. La jahoon wa la taarafoon yeghoriki feya.

And I became torn. I had no prestige or luxury to tempt you with.

Fakhalini li ahati.

So then leave me with my grief ..

Law taasorina seneen al omr akmalaha.

If you squeeze the years of my life completely,

La sala minha nazifoon min jirahati.

The blood from my wounds would flow.

Law konto zad tarafin ma konti rafidatan hobi.

If I had riches, you would not have refused my love.

Wa lakina osr al hal, fokor al hal, daaf al hali maasaai.

But I am in a state of difficulty, a state of poverty, a state of weakness.

Aanaito, aanait.

I suffered... I suffered

La hozno aboho bihi. Wa lasti tadrin shayaan an moanati.

But I do not reveal my sorrow, and you did not know a thing about my suffering.

Amshi wa adhako, ya Layla, mokabaratan.

I walk and smile, oh Layla, because I'm stubborn.

Alli okhabi an al nas ihtidarati.

So I hide from the people, my approaching death.

La al nas tirifo ma amri fa tazironi.

For if the knew what is the matter, they would try to console me.

Wa la sabilal adayhim fi moasati.

And I knew that they could not.

Yarsoo bi jafnaya hermanon yamooso dami.

Deprivation rests upon my brow and sucks my blood.

Wa yastabiho iza shaa abtisamati.

And only he can allow me to smile.

Maazoraton anti in ajhaftili amali.

You are forgiven for aborting my hopes.

La al zanb zanboki, bal kanat hamakati.

The fault is not yours; it was my foolishness.

Adaato fi arad al sahraai qafilati.

I wasted my procession in the desert.

Wa jeito abhatho fee ainaiki aan zati.

And I came, looking for myself in your eyes.

Wa jeito ahdanak al khadraa montashian.

And I came, looking for happiness in your embrace.

Kal tifli yaahmilo ahlami al bariqati.

Like a child, I formed my innocent dreams.

Gharasti kafaki taktathin awridati.

And you planted your palms and uprooted my veins.

Wa tashakina bila rifkin masarati.

And you are planted without the kindness of my pleasures.

Wa ghorbata,

And she emigrated...

Modaaon hajarat modoni aani.

My lost cities emigrated away from me

Wa ma abhrat minha shiraati.

And my sails never left her.

Nofito wa astawtan al aghrabo fi baladi.

I was exiled and the strangers settled in my country

Wa damaro kolo ashyaa al habibatihi.

And they destroyed all my beloved things.

Khanatki ainaki.

Your eyes betrayed you.

Fi zaifin wa fi kazibin.

With forgery and lying

Am gharak al bohrojo al khadaa.

Your confusion decieved you.

Mawlati.

My lady.

Farashaton geito olki kohla ajnihati la adaiki.

I came as a butterfly to place within your hands, the colors of my wings.

Fahtarakat zolma janihati.

Then injustice burned my wings.

Asiho wa al saifo mazroon bi khasirati.

I screamed while the sword was implanted in my chest.

Wa al ghadro hatama amali al aridati.

And the betrayal destroyed my huge hopes.

Wa anti aydan ala tabat yadaki.

And you also, I perished on your hands.

Ala tabat yadaki.

I perished from your hands.

Iza sarti qatlia wa astazabti anati.

Because you preferred my murder and loved the sound of my groans.

Mali bi hazf ismaki al shafaafi min loghati.

And so I deleted your precious name from my languages.

Izan satomsi bila Layla... Layla.

Therefore, they will be told without Layla... Layla

Izan satomsi bila Layla... hikayati.

Therefore they will be told without Layla, my stories.
