cynical lady Posted February 4, 2009 BACKGROUND The first Million Women Rise demonstration in March 2008 saw 5000 women and children take to the streets of London to celebrate International Women’s Day and to show our united rage and opposition to male perpetrated violence. It was the largest demonstration of women against male violence in UK history and the most diverse demonstration many of us had ever attended. Because male violence against women continues, so too does Million Women Rise... WHY MARCH? AND IN MARCH? Women’s right to live free from violence and / or the fear of violence has not been achieved. Women continue to be attacked and violated in many different ways, in our homes, on our streets, on our public transport, at our places of work. The government, the TV and newspapers do very little to address this issue; instead they often blame women for wearing the wrong clothes or being in the wrong place. If you think this needs to change, then join us on a public demonstration to show those in power that it’s just not good enough! We need to show our mass dissatisfaction; we need to be strong together and in large numbers. Unity is strength; the voices of many are louder together than a single voice. 8th March is recognised worldwide as international women's day - we are marching on Saturday 7th March to show our united dissatisfaction about how we, women in the UK, and women from across the globe are still be harmed or live under the threat of being harmed on a day by day basis. This enables 8th March to be a day that celebrates the contribution of women worldwide and for local activities to take place. If you want to see change for yourself, your children, your families, your communities then join us on 7th March 2009 and say no to violence against women! LOCATION At present the MARCH ROUTE in London will be as follows: Meeting at PORTMAN SQUARE Marching through OXFORD STREET, REGENT STREET & PICCADILLY CIRCUS Rallying at WATERLOO PLACE(Lower Regent Street) The Million Woman Rise Coalition welcomes the support of ALL women who wish to join the March and sign up to our statement of demands http://www.millionwomenrise.com/about/about/statem ent.html
