Addis Ababa–At least 17 doctors that have completed medical courses are stranded in Ethiopia.

The doctors are Somalilanders by birth but having graduated from Hayat University & Bathel Medical College were refused to be granted their medical licenses in order to practice after graduation.

Medical universities in Ethiopia have put in place a law requiring all nationals to do 2 years national service or either pay 80, 000 Ethiopian Birr in order to receive their medical licenses.

The rule was also applied to Somaliland medical graduates from Ethiopian medical universities and now are languishing in Ethiopia unless Somaliland authority engage with Ethiopian officials so as to let the students receive their licenses and return home.

Former minister of health Dr. Suleiman Isse under president Silanyo’s administration spoke with Ethiopian officials who withhold their certificates and licenses to Somaliland students but after Somaliland held presidential election the students are now facing a similar scenario.

The parents of the graduate doctors from Somaliland are calling on President Bihi to urgent address their concern amid Ethiopia’s in a state of emergency.
