Make me look pretty

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have no idea how to use foundation, blusher etc. Maybe I'm a bit of a tomboy, but I never wear make-up, except sometimes eye-liner and a shaded lipbalm and mascara for when I want to look goth. So I figured you well-groomed ladies could maybe help me out.

So what are your techniques? Don't assume I know the basics, I don't, so talk me through the whole thing. What types of foundations, concealers, powders and stuff are there, and in which order do you use them.

Also what products to use, especially foundations? I have been to a few 'make-over' sessions at department stores and I always walk out looking like a geisha girl. :(

So, it's part of my new year's resolution to be more feminine. Who knows, if I get the make-up thing down, I might squeeze my big toes into one of those high-heel thingies.

Go and make me look pretty girls smile.gif

LOL.

Eye liner, Mascara and lip gloss/glass (if you're a MAC lover) is all you need. I hardly wear make-up unless I'm attending a function and even then I make an appointment at the department stores.

I like the clean look. I hate cakey make-up that cracks as soon as you smile. Try foundations that aren't oil based; better yet try loose powders (Clinique would be a great place to start.)

As for applying it, um we are on the same boat.

^^^For the days I wake up looking like Shrek.

You can get great foundations from either Mac or Iman, blush from Ruby and Millie (really great, never fades), Mac also have great eyeshadows...that's all you need.

Application isnt all that hard, just get creative...

I know how to apply foundation/underbase/powders but it just feels unnatural.I agree with JLee sometimes a loose powder is good if you want to tone down a little bit of shine to compliment the nude look.

I'm all about the eyes,I love keeping a nude palete on my face and lips(all one tone with clearlipgloss ontop of the nude coloured lippy)

Anyway yeah I love trying quirky looks for my eyes if I am going to a wedding or party or some.I dont like all that stuff on me face like blusher and that.

Givenchy,The Body Shop&Mac are my fav & do a never ending host of colours to suit even the most daring people!

The Body Shop....

Givenchy wow this is a work of art, preferably I would go with either blues/greens only or reds/golds only never together I'm not that brave.....

Mac teach you online...

Also The Body shop do a great shimmer that I use in the summer. If you apply a lil lotion under it stays put and adds a shine. But I was on holiday and not in polluted London so maybe tone it a lil down if you're a city girl Xu.

Kinda like Rihanna's look in SOS but her makeup artists added tons!

Like Mantra said Iman is good for foundation and bases as is Lancome. smile.gif

Wow that was probably the longest reply I've ever done!

lol Xalimo the new body shop spring colours simply arent for Africans! I haven't bought make up in ages...I'll hit town tomorrow. I hate wearing make-up, coming home in the wee hours of the morning after a terrible somali wedding, the last thing you want to do is struggle with facial wash cloths and what not.

I'll go check out kensington too inshallah, by the way this mascara is great

I don't like the feel of foundation. Unless you have real skin tone issues, it's best to a use a tinted moisturizer instead. I like Lancôme’s.

You just dap little spots all over your face and blend it in with your fingers.

After that, you'll need to get a big brush and apply shimmer sparingly. The body shops shimmer, posted by Xaliimo is good.

Their eye shadow shimmer cubes are really nice too. Apply eyeliner liquid is best and mascara for more impact (I usually skip this).

Use a brow liner to define your brows. It's a must for some of us ;)

Lips.

I keep it real simple. I just line my lips and apply and blend the best gloss on earth p178.jpg

eye-liner and a shaded lipbalm and mascara

I think thats more than enough hun, even for a wedding.

lool @make a appointment with department store :D

I like how make up looks on other people, but i just don't have the patience. And washing it off 2/3 times a day and re applying it will just do my head in.

I like the looks Xalimopatra posted, damn they look good. But hear my question, will that still look good with our darker colour (seen as the women is white) i don't know if we can pull off bold colours like that.

Hey girls,

Well the colours may be a bit too chalky for some shades but it was the way that it was applied that I was emphasizing on! smile.gif Btw as a black female I can carry off turquoises and greens. It depends on how you apply it and how much you apply, and ofcourse the occasion/outfit.Aslong as everything else is toned down you can turn up the volume on the eyes :D Wearing eyemakeup is like a luxury because it's hardly ever the right time(I mean school/work?come on!) or you're too damn busy and the look you wanted doesn't fructify and you opt for the eyeliner/vaseline duo loool.

Here's 2 examples on black skin from Iman emphasizing on coppers, golds, teals and oranges...

i255324_1.jpg

i255414_iman2.jpg

Also I like when soma shadow is applied but with a black liner in the top lid and white pencil in the inner bottom lid....

i255362_iman.jpg

You can never go wrong with a black eyeshadow in your kit.It doubles up as a smokey eyeliner when you cant be asked to apply with a pen and it looks like it took maximum effort when it was really minimal...

i255428_iman3.jpg

PS Xu -Sorry about going on about eyemakeup dear. You're original query was about application of foundations, powders, fluids and such.Ok well aslong as you opt for minimal you cant go wrong. Also if you go to the dept store.Instead of asking for a makeover make sure you take a good friend(someone who will tell the makeup specialist off if they playing with ya) and make sure you leave knowing your skin type.Even if you dont find the products you are looking for in that spot DONT settle for them.Shop around. What may be good for one Xalimo may not necessarily suit another.Oh yeah and be thorough/well researched.Tell them you only want base/loose powder from 'this range' or whatever and nothing else.Sometimes they try and sell you other products! :D

Tip 201:B4 applying makeup ask your self, where are you going,? wedding, work, workout,or just wondering around? once you figure out,

TIP 202,

WEDDING: SHINE, more shine

work out: nude and a lipgloss

work: simple and natural,

wondering around: same as wedding , you never know who you will meet around the corner.

....do you guys feel naked without your mascara? ..

-Lily-

wondering around: same as wedding , you never know who you will meet around the corner.

:D , but keep it natural. Only go overboard when the occasion calls for it. I get shocked when I see women wearing full on blinding make up on a regualr daily basis(mostly arab girls).

You wear make up to work out?! To the gym?

Xalimopatra, quiet the eye make up junki aren't you? I can't see anything though?

My recommendation do not do any foundation, It spoils ur skin by closing ur pores

Just work on making ur face skin look @ its best by doing the basic:

Drink lots of water

Using the right cleanser n moisturize (my recombination on that has to be…. the products by: Caudalie, I use it and it’s amazing, u will notice/feel the result immediately! I highly recommend it )

Once u get ur skin glowing naturally than, u rock it with nice lipstick n Mascara from MAC (as most ppl suggested) than u r all set
