Major Towns in Somaliland Face shortage of Khat

Somaliland is faced with shortage of Khat, a herbal stimulant after Ethiopia has stopped the khat much widely consumed in Somaliland major towns. Today was a hard day for Khat consumers in Hargeisa as they wandered on and off the major markets where Khat is sold in order to get a bit to reduce the sleeplessness. Consumers have faced a tough time to buy an expensive Khat which has skyrocketed due to the shortage. The price of Kilo of Khat has increased from 50, 000 Shillings to 150, 000 Shillings according to Khat sellers in Hargeisa. Crowd of Khat consumers have tried to loot the herbal stimulant that has arrived in the market but police have fioled the attempt and brought the situation under control.

It is said that Ethiopia announced three-day stoppage of Khat export to Somaliland due to the marking Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day in Ethiopia. There is another report which has confirmed that there is an ethnic Oromo and Somali clashes that halted the khat trade between Somaliland and Ethiopia.
