When Islam is used as an excuse to oppress women

^ Turkey is trying to get into the EU. As such, every little thing they do (or don't) is under the microscope. How do you want to approach this, Femme? As a culture with backward practices or one that is purposely (rightly or wrongly) being made to look backward?

^Look at the other side. Because of that also, they would want to make 'laws' against honour killings and such. Why weren't they made before? They are not obviously doing it because they recognize that its 'wrong' 'immortal' 'haram'. Its sickens me what they would do to kiss the EU butt. Too bad all they're getting is a faceful of feces.

How can anyone make a culture look bad when in fact...IT IS?

^ Culture may have bad aspects, it can't be entirely bad. Are you saying ignorance of Islam and a patriarchal social system have combined into a deadly dish for women? Or are you saying the rights and freedoms given to women in Islam are overshadowed by those given to men? Finally, could you be saying religions, such as Islam, are incapable of really changing the attitudes and customs of people developed over millennia?

Cara.

Femme, in neither of these cases is Islam being used as an excuse to oppress women. The situation in Turkey is fubar as far as women go. The law is always going to be playing catch up to a societal code that is so misogynistic it makes Somalia look like it's ruled by Amazons.

It's the same in India. The Hindu culture is extremely anti-women in many instances, and Islam could hardly be to blame for some of the sh!t that goes on there. The Muslim Indians pretty much act like the other Indians culturally, and they have a hard time getting rid of the anti-women baggage of Hindu culture. They've had more success with eliminating caste discriminations, though.
