Somaliland Sentences 2 Journalists to 7 months in Jail

BERBERA–Berbera district court today sentenced journalists Abdirahman Mohamed Egge and Ahmed Said Mohamed, to seven months of prison. The mayor of Berbera, Hon. Abdishakur Idin sued the two reporters working for Saab TV and Eryal TV respectively. There are five reporters currently serving prison terms in Hargeisa, Borama and Berbera. Media and human rights organizations have condemned the sentence and called on the government to free the journalists without condition. It is now apparent that Somaliland authority is muzzling media and reporters who are critical to government should be immediately arrested.
