Saalax Posted January 2, 2018 First federal government minister to visit the northern regions since the 90s. 1
Holac Posted January 2, 2018 It is an interesting development. Somaliland is well aware that Puntland ministers visit the region all the time, but is there more on the line for Somaliland now that a Federal minister has joined the list?
Che -Guevara Posted January 2, 2018 I am guessing the Minister is from the area clan wise?
Holac Posted January 2, 2018 Yes, Jamal is from Maakhir.
Che -Guevara Posted January 2, 2018 I think Puntland is winning over this community slowly. The new road that's being built will connect Bosaso to towns and villages in Eastern Sanaag, something that will increase trade and people movement. It is one of the few things Abdiwali did right. Holac Posted January 2, 2018 I concur. The community in Maakhir is overwhelmingly pro-Puntland. Let's hope Jamal is visiting the region to assess its development needs rather than indulge in typical Somali minister self-promotion. The SFG recently got a significant monetary pledge from the US and Qatar, therefore any development projects must be fairly distributed to all regions.
Saalax Posted January 3, 2018 The two main Sanaag communities are the eastern HY and the Badhan community. Somaliland only had the support of the former and it lost whatever little leverage it had. Next time federal government officials will be welcomed in Ceerigaabo, Maydh etc.

Badhan is controlled by local clans. In fact, there are local clan melitia that are allied to Somaliland and there are those that are allied to Puntland. The political situation there is very much similar to Laascaanood of 2005 when both Somaliland & Puntland melitias coexisted in the same town. The clan elders are friendly to all sides which means Somaliland also achieves its objectives there when it is necessary i.e. election time etc. Since there are not much political capital to be gotten from there, it is not a high priority for Somaliland to fully bring it under its sole authority. The cost benefit analysis does not justify a full scaled takeover. Buuhoodleh ranks higher priority with a lot more political benefit.
Tallaabo Posted January 3, 2018 The Eastern Sanaag community should be careful not to attract unnecessary conflicts in their area. Somaliland did not really care that much about Puntland officials coming in and going out of these regions, but if the SFG in Mogadishu comes into the scene, then Somaliland will most likely deploy a large number its troops in the region and turn it into war-zone- a situation not in the interest of anyone. They can't do much. Somalia gov officials (MPs) arrive daily in Buhoodle by plane which is a stone away from Burco nevermind Sanaag.
Holac Posted January 3, 2018 The Eastern Sanaag (Somaliland) community should pursue its own interests and not be beholden to any one existing admin. If the SFG is willing to bring development projects to the area, the Erigavo community should welcome any minister who wants to visit. Bring home the bacon! 1

Indeed everyone should follow their national regional interest. Truth be told Sanaag needs a lot of development projects it has been neglected since the 60s.
