Deeq A. Posted December 28, 2017 MOGADISHU– Somali Federal Government officially takes over the control of its airspace on Thursday 28 Dec. A colorful ceremony was launched in Mogadishu which saw the attendance of Somalia’s present, Mohamed Abdilahi Farmajo who formally opened the airspace control tower at Aden Abdulle International Airport. The Internationale Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) handed over the airspace administration to Somali authority which it administered for two decades since the collapse of its central government in Somalia in the 1990’s. Somali President has inspected the control tower and the equipment and has commended the ongoing work. The ceremony was attended by Somalia’s government ministers, Members of parliament and ICAO officials. As Somalia is rejoicing, Somaliland which is located in north-western Somalia is outraged at Mogadishu for assuming full control of the country’s entire airspace, including that of Somaliland.” Somaliland’s Civil Aviation Manager, Hon. Abdi Mohamed Rodol has accused Somalia of breaching the Istanbul accords by failing to live up to the terms of the agreement singed during the airspace talks brokered by Turkish government which was held there where officials from Somalia and Somaliland met and came up with a deal that was meant to end the airspace standoff between the two regions. Somaliland is adamant that it won’t accept that its airspace will be controlled from Mogadishu. He called on the United Nation, ICAO and neighboring countries to intervene the airspace deadlock and bring the two sides to resolve the matter to negotiation table. Somaliland unilaterally declared independence from Somalia in 1991, but it is still regarded as part of Somalia by Mogadishu. Holac Posted December 28, 2017 There is not much that Somaliland can do about this.
Old_Observer Posted December 28, 2017 Hopefully this can be resolved. Air traffic control is not only guiding traffic but also being able to provide assistance when difficulties or accidents happen. One also needs to investigate incidents, or at least preserve the sight if other countries help is needed to investigate. If this disagreement continues both can loose the authority again and returned to UN, IATA..control as it has been.
Che -Guevara Posted December 28, 2017 There's no disagreement as one side has the legal authority, the other doesn't.

Che, That is true, but as it stands now the SFG agency will not be able to provide assistance or follow invetigation if something happened over Somaliland. Holac Posted December 28, 2017 ^^ Very good point. But if there is an air disaster and Somaliland refuses to cooperate, it would damage Somaliland's credibility and standing in the region. Somaliland's airspace may become off limits to international air travel which will have a huge impact on Somaliland's economy and the booming Hargeisa/Duba/Djibouti/Addis travel business.

galbeedi Posted December 29, 2017 This is the first step to exercise Somali sovereignty throughout the REpublic. Anyone can claims an autonomous enclave, yet that does not give them authority over the air space of the Somali territory. People must understand that it was the instability of Southern Somalia that emboldened the politicians in Somaliland. If responsible government took charge of Mogadishu in the nineties, there would never have been this useless debate. Somaliland is flooded with foreign aid which all targeted in one single city called HArgeisa, if hundred of millions were poured in Baidoa or KIsmaayo the result could have been even better. Now, somewhat weak but responsible government has taken root in MOgadishu , and it must exercise full sovereignty over the Somali air space. Technical people could be based in HArgeisa or other places, but the decision must be in the hands of Somali authority. The reason the Turkish agreement was entered was the secessionists signed a memorandum of understanding to start the process of unity. Unless they renounce the secession they should never be allowed to enter any agreements, period. They have been fooling Southern presidents for too long.

It baffles the mind why you guys would even bother proffering sincere commentary about the complaints of a man out of a job.😆 Methinks, it’s time the “Honorable” minister applied for a new gig with the new Biixi administration instead of wasting precious time looking hapless in front of the media. Che -Guevara Posted December 29, 2017 Wasiirkii hore ee Wasaaradda Duulista Siciid Qorsheel on Today's Event. He touches on Somaliland. Mind you, listen how hard IC worked to make sure Somalis not get back the control of their airspace. http://allsanaag.com/wasiirkii-hore-ee-wasaaradda-duulista-oo-faahfaahin-ka-bixiyey-taariikhda-heshiiska-ay-soomaaliya-kula-wareegtay-hawadeeda/

Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar Posted December 29, 2017 Quote The projected 30 M per year from flights that use our air space is not reflected in our 2018 budget The budget was passed before this was officially handed over. Dah. But if it makes you very happy inay hawadeena shisheeye iska sii maamulaan, lacagtana iska cunaan, si fiican ugu seexo; but the fact is from yesterday hawadeena Xamar baa laga maamulaa, iska dhagatir/indhatir or not, waana guul Soomaaliya iyo Soomaalida dhan u soo hoyatay.
