Africa’s first waste-to-energy plant in Ethiopia

Africa’s first ever waste-to-energy plant is being built in Ethiopia.

The Reppie facility, which is due to start operating in January 2018, will process 1,400 tons of waste every day – that’s roughly 80% of the city’s rubbish.

It will supply the capital city of Addis Ababa with 30% of its household electricity needs and meet European standards on emissions.

The project is a partnership between the Government of Ethiopia and a consortium of international companies – Singapore’s Cambridge Industries, China National Electric Engineering and Danish engineering firm Ramboll.

Zerubabel Getachew, Ethiopia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN in Nairobi said: “The Reppie project is just one component of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to address pollution and embrace renewable energy across all sectors of the economy.

“We hope Reppie will serve as a model for other countries in the region and around the world.”
