UNSOM CONGRATULATES MR. MUSE BIHI ABDI ON HIS ELECTION AS PRESIDENT OF “SOMALILAND”

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) congratulates Mr. Muse Bihi Abdi of the Peace, Unity and Development (KULMIYE) Party on his election as President of “Somaliland”, as confirmed by the “Somaliland” Supreme Court yesterday.

 

Both international and domestic observers have indicated that the electoral process and the voting itself were conducted in a generally peaceful manner and yielded a credible outcome. UNSOM welcomes this, and commends the political and traditional leaders in “Somaliland” for resolving the elections-related disputes that emerged.

UNSOM urges the incoming administration to continue to advance inclusive politics and consolidate democracy, peace and stability among Somalilanders. 

 

UNSOM looks forward to building on the existing relationship with Somaliland based on the agreed roadmap for United Nations support to “Somaliland” and Somaliland’s Development Plan II. UNSOM also stands ready to support the resumption of dialogue between Somalia and “Somaliland”.

A visiting delegation from Djibouti arrived in Hargeisa today to pave way for an official delegation from gov't of Djibouti aimed at participating in the Presidential inauguration on 14th of December.

Swedish Political Party will introduce a motion in Swedish Parliament calling for diplomatic recognition of Somaliland.

AMM (Siilaanyo) whose gov't is in lame-duck period, has vacated the Presidential palace in preparation for handover of power ceremony on 14th of December. Close to 30 countries are invited to the ceremony.

On 13 November, people across Somaliland took part in elections to choose a new President. The UK played an active role as part of a group of international donors in supporting the Somaliland National Election Commission in planning, preparing and delivering these elections. On 16 November, the international election observation mission stated in their initial findings that they had not witnessed irregularities on a scale which would undermine the integrity of the result. The UK joined international partners in expressing our deepest regrets for the loss of life caused by violent protests in some locations in the days which followed the voting.

 

On 21 November, the National Election Commission announced that Mr Musa Bihi Abdi had been chosen by the people of Somaliland as their next President. The UK Ambassador in Somalia has extended the UK’s warm congratulations to Mr Musa Bihi Abdi on his election and has commended the commitment and responsibility of opposition candidates, Somaliland’s people, and its institutions to the electoral process and strengthening democracy.

 

The UK remains committed to helping people from across the Somali region to reach their fullest potential. We now look forward to deepening our partnership with Somaliland as we support Mr Bihi in fulfilling his aspiration to govern for the benefit of all Somalilanders.
