Somalia's al-Shabab journalist Hassan Hanafi sentenced to death

Somali military court has sentenced to death a former journalist who helped al-Shabab kill five fellow reporters.

 

Hassan Hanafi assisted the Islamist militant group by indentifying possible targets amongst journalists between 2007 and 2011.

 

 

 

 

 

The chairman of Somali military court Hassan Ali Nur who read the verdict told reporters that Hassan Hanafi Hajji has confessed of murdering the following journalists.

 

Mahad Ahmed Elmi (2007)Said Tahlil Ahmed (2009)Mukhtar Mohamed Hirabe, Radio Shabelle director (2009)Sheikh Nur Mohamed Abkey (2010).

 

He joined its armed wing after working for Radio Andalus, al-Shabab’s mouthpiece in Somalia.

 

More than 25 journalists have been murdered in Somalia since 2007, the Committee to Protect Journalists says.

 

While he was working for al-Shabab, Hanafi would call up journalists and threaten them with death if they refused to join the militant group, the BBC Somali’s Mohammud Ali says.

 

The court in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, ruled that he should be executed by firing squad.

 

Hanafi was arrested by police in 2014 in neighbouring Kenya, where he had fled, and was then transferred to Somalia.

Malister, convicting and video taping of the firing squad of these teenage boys won't resolve the problem. The current chief of the national intelligence service Mr. C/Rahman Tuuryare made his name as the chairman of the military court. He oversaw the fire squad shooting of more than ten Al-Shabaab teenagers and boys. It made him elevate to NIS chief, but never resolved the problem. Keep the in jail and try to learn as much as possible. Why are you rushing?. Why are they parading these killers in the media before the case even goes to court?.

 

Who are the handlers of these boys?, what have you learned from their custody?. They paraded this man Hassan Hanafi, as the one who was behind the killing of at least 25 journalists. The biggest and most shocking killings of the journalists happened during the Ethiopian occupation of Mogadishu. Both Horn Afric and Shabelle media were critics of the Transitional Federal government and Ethiopian forces, yet this man and his so called Al-Shabaab connection killers targeted them. Why?.

 

I am not interested in this useful killer and his confessions, I want the big fish that was pulling the strings. We need information.

They all agreed that the nation security of the capital will be handled by the regional administration.

 

You can not delegate your responsibility to secure the nations capital . The local level districts and their small police contingent do not have the capacity to fight insurgents. This President has done his best. He may have presided the opening of Mogadishu airport and other developments during his term, and we thank him for his efforts. Having said that, the time has come for an extraordinary leader to tackle these tough issues including security problems. In 2012, We were all expecting that extraordinary leader , but some how Hassan got job. We were patient with him for the last four years, but the time has come for him to retire and give someone else the chance to lift Somalia.
