somfilms Posted October 30, 2015 How has the negative portrayal of Somalis affected you? There is not enough diversity in the media featuring people of color, and when the topic of Somalis come up, it is overwhelmingly negative. Do you personally feel the stigma of being black, african, Somali, an immigrant/refugee or children of parents who fled their country? Which label brings the most pain? And how do you cope with constantly being labelled a problem? FYI. If you don't identify as black, that's fine, but many do, and Somalis are viewed as black by the mainstream culture, so let us please avoid any comments such as "Somalis aren't black, they are arab, or "Somalis aren't Arab, they are African." Let's just focus on the question. Please let us avoid any argument, I simply would like to hear how each of you feels. Thanks!
