Speaker, Djibouti president confer on furthering ties

Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani conferred on Saturday with Djibouti President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh on ways to enhance trade ties between the two countries.

 

In the meeting, Larijani recalled the friendly relations between Iran and Djibouti in all areas noting that it is vital for the two countries to work together in the campaign against sea pirates, IRNA reported.

Larijani also invited the Djibouti president to pay an official visit to Iran.

The Djibouti president called for expansion of relations and cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran and said Djibouti appreciates the services of the Iranian architects in the construction of Djibouti parliament building.

The Majlis speaker was in Djibouti to inaugurate the new building of the Djiboutian parliament.

Larijani also had a meeting with his Djiboutian counterpart Edris Arnato during which the two sides underlined the need to further promote ties in all sectors.

Cooperation between the two countries is developing and right now, there is extensive cooperation, especially in trade, between the two countries, noted Larijani.

Arnato, for his part, voiced his country's eagerness to utilize Iran's capacity and potential to develop mutual cooperation.

Also, speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the parliament speaker reiterated, "Iran and Djibouti have done their best to expand cooperation" and they will follow the same course in the future.

He said that implementation of several bilateral agreements indicates the extent of mutual cooperation between Iran and Djibouti in various areas.

He pointed to the two countries' cooperation in fighting international piracy, and said, "The valuable cooperation between Iran and Djibouti in combating piracy will greatly influence (the improvement of) security and trade in the region."

Regional maritime security

On Friday, Larijani also had a first-hand look at the domestically-built Jamaran destroyer and Bushehr logistic vessel which have docked in Djibouti.

He said Iran is a peace-seeking country in the Middle East which has improved regional maritime security.

The presence of Iranian naval forces in the Gulf of Aden and regional waters to fight pirates and facilitate maritime traffic has helped established security for Iran and the entire region, Larijani noted.

"In recent years, we witnessed insecurity in the region which harmed different countries, but the presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy ensured security for the ships," the top parliamentarian added.

He underlined that the measures reflect Iran's policy on establishing peace in the region.

The 32nd fleet of the Iranian Navy, which includes the Jamaran destroyer and Bushehr logistic vessel, left the country's southern port of Bandar Abbas for the Gulf of Aden on November 4 to provide security along shipping lines in the region.

The flotilla has been dispatched to the Gulf of Aden to protect the Islamic Republic's interests in distant waters.

In recent years, Iran's Navy has increased its presence in international waters to protect naval routes and provide security for merchant vessels and tankers.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has also been conducting patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard merchant containers and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran or other countries.

Iran's Navy has managed to foil several attacks on both Iranian and foreign tankers during its missions in international waters.
