Why are Somalis celebrating October 21st?

Recommended Posts

All over social media, Somalis are celebrating the 45th anniversary of Siad Barre's takeover of Somalia!

Why would Somalis celebrate the events of October 1969, when President Sharmarke was assassinated and then we had the Marxist Dictator Siad Barre take over the country, leading to economic instability, political repression, and state violence against civilians?

And his dictatorial rule directly led to the anarchy and inter-clan violence which plagued Somalia in the 1990's. This man was an all-around disaster for our country. He destroyed whatever institutions we had and Somalia still hasn't recovered from Siad Barre's disastrous policies. Sure, he may have done some good things in the past. But the way this man poisoned the country is absolutely unforgivable.

And it shocks me why Somalis celebrate this man. It doesn't make any sense

Those who are celebrating this man are doing so because of clan connections. Tribalism has blinded the Somalis and darkened their soul.

It is strange some Somalis feel the need to rub old wounds with salt by celebrating Siyad's seizure of power when so many people died because of it.

The revolution was more than Siyaad and his mistakes. A lot was achieved, although something more important was lost in 69.

At the end of the day, we must commemorate the achievements of the Kacaaan, as well as condemn its mistakes.

The Kacaan is Somali history now. We must learn from it, and move on!

It's retarded of you guys to accuse everyone and anyone who acknowledges the many successes of the Kacaan as doing so merely for clan reasons.

Tillamook, there are many Somalis who don't share his clan background, but who are STILL supportive of Afweyne and his disastrous policies. Afweyne poisoned Somalia and to this day the country hasn't recovered.

They have a nostalgic view of the 1970's and 1980's as if Somalia was a modern-day Finland or Canada! That's just not true saaxib! There were Somalis dying of famine even then. There were Somalis fleeing to different countries in fear of political repression even then.

Sure Siad Barre is far better than some of Somalia's most recent Presidents. BUT, I don't appreciate how Somalis are celebrating the end of democratic rule in October 1969 and it being replaced with a Marxist Authoritarian Regime. It was an all-around disaster for our country.

Ahem.

But onwards,

There are other reasons people support M. Siyaad Barre. He is a national figure much like Siyaadka. His methods can be objectively disagreed with but he did rule Somalia at its global peak. And people admire that.

Correction- its Sayidka, not Siyaadka

As for Siyaad Barre and every other leader before or after, they all had their faults, but we can only judge them by their legacy and any benefit to the nation that outlived them.

Based on those benchmarks, sadly despite a good start he left nothing but misery, disunity, heightened clan divisions.

For the man that claims those that support him are just his clan- well i think it is you that is clan oriented. People across the country are divided on the late president and in fact he has more support with other clans than his own in the country, but of course you are the prodigy children of ingiriiska!

For the record, the massacres in somalia were first commanded by reer woqooyi like colonel Dhagaweeyne who murdered almost 30,000 in mudug regions followed by colonel tanzania who repeated the same and also poisoning wells, something no one has done before or after. Both these men are prominent politicians in SL. Do you therefore have anything to complain about?.... No!. If anything its a case of Karma is a bitch
