The Islamic State claimed credit for today's suicide attack in Baghdad that killed Ahmed al Khafaji, who was a senior commander in the Shiite Badr militia and a member of parliament, along with at least 20 other Iraqis. Khafaji's death was confirmed by another member of Iraq's parliament as well as by a hospital official.

 

"Khafaji was a member of the main Shiite bloc in parliament, the State of Law coalition, of which Prime Minister Haidar al Abadi's Dawa party is also part," AFP reported.

 

11. Shia units suffered severe losses in lives around tikrit numbers of dead not confirmed yet.

 

12. In kobane it seems the YPG Kurdish Marxists are trying to hold on to the actual border crossing with Turkey while abandoning the entire Eastern and southern sections of the town. A lot of airstrikes against islamic state forces has led to pauses in fighting. The islamic state forces have been shelling the YPG section of the town for the last few days and have used suicide attacks as we'll against key YPG areas. The stand off for the border post continues, little information is getting out at present.

In recent months, Shi’a militias have been abducting and killing Sunni civilian men in Baghdad and around the country. These militias, often armed and backed by the government of Iraq, continue to operate with varying degrees of cooperation from government forces – ranging from tacit consent to coordinated, or even joint, operations. Amnesty International holds the government of Iraq largely responsible for the serious human rights abuses, including war crimes, committed by these militias.

 

 

14. The United States state department congratulates the Iraqi people in choosing a mass murder as interior minister.

1. Early morning air raid on islamic state positions in kobane to facilitate air drops of ammunition and medical supplies to the PKK (a terrorist listed organisation). So far 135 airstrikes on kobane in 30 days.

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Islamic State won territory from Syrian government forces in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Tuesday, its first gain there in about two months, a group that tracks the civil war reported.

 

Fighters from both sides were killed during the clashes in Deir al-Zor city, about 450 km (280 miles) northeast of Damascus in a province bordering Iraq, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said without giving a death toll.

 

Islamic State, which is being targeted by U.S.-led air strikes in Iraq and Syria, seized large areas of Deir al-Zor's industrial region, meaning it now controls more than half the city, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory.

 

The Islamist militant group, which is also battling Kurdish forces for control of the town of Kobani at the Turkish border, brought reinforcements to Deir al-Zor in recent days, Abdulrahman said.

 

The U.S. air force dropped arms to Kurds defending Kobani, also known as Ayn al-Arab, on Monday. Washington has ruled out such cooperation with the government of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad

1. IS has taken control of another strategic hill overlooking the city of kobane ( via source in kobane via twitter). If IS takes the border crossing area that means the entire city has been encircled.

1. United States spends 500 thousand dollars bombing a symbolic IS flag on hill overlooking kobane. Flag worth 6 dollars and stick 2 dollars. Strikes have not changed the fact that IS still control the West of kobane. According to twitter feeds both the IS members pictured survived one with injuries. But both survived. The main points of the airstrikes missed them.

Opinion:

 

As the situation unfolds what's becoming evident is how this war will shape out. It is my honost opinion based on what I'm reading in the region that the situation across the middle east is set to get even worse. In kobane the city is stragically impossible to defend indefinitely even with air drops and fighters holding some territory. Numbers of IS fighters, determination, resources and territory shows that kobane will eventually fall followed by hassakah region which are linked. Once these territories fall the battle for syria will be between assad and IS. Kobane is the capital of the YPG affiliate of the PKK. If kobane falls hassakah falls. In Iraq the peshmerge are losing land. And it is only the airstrikes the continue to keep them actually existing. In Iraq proper the central government is quickly losing more and more territory. The fact that the United States and the coalition powers have totally rejected sending ground troops means that IS in the long term will take more land and hold it. From that territory they will probably expand and grow. Therefore my conclusion is the middle east has changed for good. We are looking at the creation of a new reality. Airstrikes have failed to contain IS.

9. Assad airforce have bombed the main bridge in deir Azzor Syria after losing the other day to IS forces. New video released by IS showing many dead Assad forces.

 

10. Intense fighting now on going in the center of kobane and the Northern part of the town. 2 airstrikes have just hit the town as well.

14. We are getting reports via Twitter that show pictures proving that IS has etheir taken the border crossing of kobane or are a few metres away from it. One picture taken showed an Is fighters within a metre of the border crossing. If this is true this means. Is has taken the south, East, West and North of the city of kobane.
