Khayr Posted September 2, 2014 http://io9.com/heres-what-happens-when-white-people-move-into-your-nei-1627658680 We used to have white flight. Now, in city centers, we have something that one policy researcher calls white infill. So what happens when a bunch of white people start moving in? The changes are a lot more profound than getting a new Starbucks on the corner. Photo by torbakhopper Actually, it probably does mean getting a Starbucks or another upscale cafe, as many people protesting the gentrification of New York's Harlem neighborhood have pointed out. But it also means a lot of other changes, mostly economic, which lead to dramatic cultural shifts. Put simply, across the United States, white infill is associated with gentrification. Sociologist Ruth Glass coined the term "gentrification" to describe class struggles in London's Notting Hill and Islington areas. In 1964, she wrote about how gentrification took place after rich Londoners moved to these previously working-class areas, displacing their current residents. What's crucial about Glass' idea is that gentrification describes how wealthy migrants push out low-income locals. This Is What Gentrification Really Is Read more In North America, gentrification takes on a racial hue. Especially in the United States, it's likely that your class position will be correlated with your racial background: for example, blacks tend to be overrepresented among low-income people, while whites are overrepresented among middle and higher-income people. This is the result of many factors, including the history of slavery and immigration in the U.S., as well as profound ongoing problems with racist forms of discrimination. As a result, the gentrification of Chicago looks very different from gentrification in Berlin, Istanbul and London. But still, they are all examples of how wealthy groups from outside a city or neighborhood displace locals with low income. White People's Money If the incomes of these locals in the U.S. were rising at the same rate as the incomes of whites, this might not be such a problem. Maybe whites would come to town, move into some abandoned places, and spruce up the joint. The problem is that the income disparity between blacks and whites has been growing immensely over the past few decades. Local black residents can't compete with the white infillers for space. So when whites flock to a black neighborhood, they are often the harbingers of doom. Rents skyrocket to the point where the original population can no longer afford it — and they move to low-income suburbs like Ferguson outside St. Louis. Suburbs have been America's ghettos for years now, though many people didn't realize it until the mortgage crisis unfolded. In media reports and analysis, it became obvious that the people hit hardest in the resulting foreclosure disaster were the suburban poor and working class, many of whom were made homeless. That was the moment when we could no longer ignore the way the populations of cities were transforming before our eyes. Whites once fled the inner cities to the suburbs, but now it's the outer cities that whites abandon for the "excitement" of city life. I'm not saying that these white people came up with a devious plan to kick out the local black or Latino populations in cities. They just don't notice when it happens, or they believe that the benefits of gentrification will "trickle down" to the poor. Their beliefs are even backed up by a few studies, using pre-2000 data, finding that gentrification doesn't result in displacement. But in the years since 2000, that picture has changed. Khadafi Posted September 3, 2014 Weather we like it or not Marx's critique on capitalism and the class-struggle, it's still relevant. His dialectical philosophy is mumbo jumbo but khayr a recent study conducted in Sweden showed that the average year of a man sinks with 10 years if you travel from the posh all-white all-rich areas to the poorer areas. Your living in the USA, a big nation but the travel I am speaking about is by train 20 minutes. All it takes to live 10 more years is to live in a area 4 km away or 15-20 minutes bus or train. Your article somehow proved it. class&race are connected by the values set by society. In America those values are somehow enshrined. It's only 100 years ago the blacks were slaves with no capital and the whites had all the capital and I do not think that one will share his wealth by "philanthropy". Whats more horrible is that the white man we knew (male, white in his 40) are no longer middle class, 1% of Americas population owns 90% of the countreys wealth. The system of mass deceit changed when we saw the financial collapse of Wallstreet but what surprised is that we did not see the mass rise social-liberalism and unionship. Wacko tea-party supported by the established upper-class with a hidden "rascist" overtone took to the streets. Obama, when he realized that his own people were those most suffering from the mass-decist decided to do something in his last 4 years. Obama-care was bitterly fought and will probably be slashed into something un-recognizable after his presidency. Same thing is happening in Europe. Ghettos long abandoned in the early 1990 middle class whites with no education is today being rent out to over-worked poor sick same whites, After living in the same house for more then 14 years I know see that my lebanese neighbors have moved out and I dearly hoped for a somali family (not a immigrant flight 13 somali refugees). Xaasid ma ahi, laakin newly arrived somalis will give migraine. After the salams comes the door knocking in the night and then a court full request for translation of a letter from the government. I simply do not have the time and the energy. So I hoped for a established somali family, maybe one of the guys whom I have known since the early 90-ties. I instead saw young white couple moving in. Waa yaabay wallaahi! The difference in the structural discrimination in the USA and Europe is massive, no one cares what your last name is in the USA. You probably know it's a immigrant nation, no one can claim it. But things are different here. I hope that nomad-swedes like Johnny and "Hilowle maandhow" responds to my critique. If you apply for a house and the renter sees your last name "mohamed" the apply is automatically rejected by the capitalist (owner) and given to a swede. This has led to a enormous segregation. Even the so called socialists politicians with their crocodile tears do not live in the ghettos. Hey! Even I would move if I got the slightest opportunity. Coming back to the story, after the usal "hi" for months I chatted with young beautiful blonde neighbor. Her husband or my wife would not have approved of my staring but I got what I wanted. She told me that they had been deeply hit by the financial crisis. Her husband got sacked and they could not afford to live in the villa. They sold it (probably not with profit). I slowly excused my self and gave her some shushumow and sambusa that my wife made (This was in Ramadan) as a neighborly gesture. Gaaal maxaa ka sugeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol! I did not even get some food back as gesture!. But one thing made me happy, 2014 in september this month is election times. When I came home after a long day I saw something odd hanging on their door. "INGEN SD REKLAM TACK". They had hung up a little note saying that they did not want commercial from the far right racist swedish party "the swedish-democrats". I told my wife lat in the night "gaaladi cuntadi bakhiilay waaba dad fiicanc". My pious beloved wife told me can you quit calling them "gaaaladi", sida oday gaboobay aa u hadaashaa ee iga aamus, they are our neighbors and gaal-or not they have rights upon us". I agreed but was so curious to know their leanings. One day while taking my child from the daycare we entered the Swedish taboo subject. Red lines in this country is RELIGION,POLITICS AND YOUR WEALTH" blue lines to talk about is the weather. I diplomatically told her husband that I appreciated the solidarity note rejecting racism and as if racists wants my vote but for the sake of talking I told him if he had a extra nore. He smiled and said sure I do gave me one. He quietly told that the decade of the right in power has slowly shredded the country into pieces and that the Swedish-model of democratic-socialism and socialist-liberalism was threatened. He then told me "plz tell the Somali community to vote for my wife". I have a appetite for discussion. I went home and said to my wife "war gaaladi waa shuuciyaal" lol. She smiled and answered plz can you stop calling them gaaladi. They womans name is XXXX. In conclusion, khayr. That man smiling and shedding his crocodile tears would move out if he had the slightest opportunity to do so. Hey! I as a black muslim man, in the bottom of the never ending class-struggle with it's structural discrimination would move out. Gaalkaani intoo jooga marka! DoctorKenney Posted September 3, 2014 Khadafi, Marx and his ideas have LONG AGO been discredited saaxib. Marx's ideas have been responsible for nothing but stagnation, anemic growth, famines and a whole host of other disasters. Just read about what happened in Ukraine in 1932, when millions of Ukrainians starved to death because of the collectivization of agriculture. It's a disaster. It's always been a disaster, and it will NEVER work. Marx is not relevant and he will never be taken seriously again Khayr, If the minorities in the USA want to advance further, then they need to adopt a value-system which encourages advancement. Chinese immigrants in the United States started off as poor, even poorer than Blacks, but within a generation they moved up in the ranks. Blacks have been living in the inner-cities in America for several generations. You can go into Philadelphia or Detroit or Baltimore or Atlanta and find nothing but Blacks. Yet the place is a hellhole. But as soon as Whites start to move in, they start to gentrify the neighborhood, clean it up, build new businesses and make it a more pleasant place to live. Why are Whites capable of doing these things and we are not? What's stopping Black Americans from pooling their resources together and investing in their own community? If you are an ambitious black person, then you are considered to have a chip on your shoulder. If you are an well and articulate black person, you are considered to be "angry and overly aggressive". Khayr, you're making the same mistake most people make when discussing economics. People assume that Economics is a way to answer people's worries and sorrows. We need to take a step back and be realistic in our expectations. No one expects a Lawyer to fix your car if it's broken. No one expects a Doctor to know how to engineer a building. Similarly, with economics, we shouldn't expect it to make our lives fulfilling or to achieve happiness. Economics is merely a tool, to allocate resources efficiently and to achieve material prosperity. That's ALL it is. And yes I agree, because in the United States, which is the richest nation in human history (an unbelievable 15 trillion dollars GDP) we have high rates of suicide and depression. We can contrast that to the Government of Umar bin Khattab, where the society was much much poorer but the people were much happier and society was much more cohesive. When you talk about it being "unfair" or "racial discrimination" when it comes to education, jobs, and housing for Black people, there are 45 million Black Americans, and if they actually worked hard to achieve their potential, then they wouldn't need the assistance of the White majority. They could hire each other, educate each other, and live amongst each other. What is so wrong with living in a Black part of town, and what is preventing Blacks from cleaning it up and making it a more pleasant place to live? Why can't Blacks in America police their OWN communities, set up their OWN schools and help advance their own society!? The advancement of the Black man in America will never come at the hands of someone else. It has to come from within. The Black man needs to help himself, and invest in his own community. The same goes for Somalis in Somalia. Mooge is always posting threads on this forum about Puntland, and how the Puntlanders (who are much poorer than Black Americans) are building their own businesses and their own infrastructure and helping themselves. So if Puntland can do it, why can't the Black Americans do it? What's stopping them? Self-reliance is key saaxib. How can you be proud of your own community if you're relying on someone else. We need to stop caring about what the White Man thinks. The thing about life is; no one gives you respect. You have to take it. You have--through your own actions--earn the respect of others. Many races had a very low opinion of the Chinese just 50 years ago, but now they begrudgingly respect them...because the Chinese earned it. Somalis were respected back in the 1970's, but today even the Kenyans look down on us. Even the Kenyans disrespect us. And it's our own fault because we put ourselves in that situation. We Somalis fought each other, were divided and as a result we lost the respect of the entire world.

Marx's ideas have been responsible for nothing but stagnation, anemic growth, famines and a whole host of other disasters. Just read about what happened in Ukraine in 1932, when millions of Ukrainians starved to death because of the collectivization of agriculture. ? Doctor, I do not know if you have studied sociology or taken a course in political science but Marx's critique on capitalism and his way of identifying the classes in society is today more relevant than ever. The financial meltdown and the global chaos that non-bounded capitalism was one of the signs that the critique is valid. Society and it's division in classes is a must-be for political pundits and a scentific fact. Rich and POOR exists but the established relationship between them are for the sociologists to study. As for communism and dialectical philosophy your completely right, much it of mumbo jumbo and worthless (to me as a muslim) Some would argue that stalin-made famine was not the result of democratic socialists, it was the result of forced labour and stalinism. But that's the play game. Doctor, I guess that you live in the USA, the land of the so called "opportunities" where a nobody and fulfill his dreams and be rich. Those days are gone by the way but it's hard for you to understand the huge difference between democratic socialism and communism. Sweden and the Scandinavian model is far from Stalin's Russia with it's horrific human right's abuses. But for you to name a dictator man-made famine in Ukraine and dismiss the existence of the class struggle as a scientific field is a blunder to sociologists. It's a extreme example you chose, and if you want to play that game to make your point let's take the famine of 1977-79 in Somalia. During those days of pan-somalism in Siyaad Barre thousands of nomads who had never eaten a fish were AIRLIFTED to Baraawe and were forced to become fishermen. Some succeeded and are still today in Baraawe. I would not say that famine was man made but the state could have done more, should I say then because of that famine the whole notion of pan-somalism, the idea that somalis should have a state is flawed? ofcourse not. Cayaarta nagaa daa saaxibow! Take a deep look on the Somalis in Minnesota. Class/race are bound to each other, ask yourself why Somalis chose to live in the state of Minnesota and not in a warm state that resembles the weather of Africa? Generous "canadian like" benefits are attractive to poor somalis. Marx's said that racism is a result of the class struggle. 1% of US population owns 90% of the us WEALTH. Do you think that these white capitalists wants blacks to share their wealth? Of course not. Structural racism is created to keep them working class and nothing less. Why do you think that higher education is equal to having money in the US? Can a single mom with a 16 hours work-shift and with 3 children to feed, can she afford to send all of her children to university? Yaab, a somali black man denying the existence of classes while his own people are the bottom it.
DoctorKenney Posted September 4, 2014 Khadafi, it's actually indisputable that government policy is the cause of the 2008 financial meltdown. It was poor monetary policy (The Federal Reserve under Alan Greenspan) and poor social policy which led to this collapse. The Government, in an effort to boost home ownership, actually encouraged the Banks to lend to low income customers, by officially GUARANTEEING the debt. This led to homes doubling, and even tripling in prices in just a few years. Homes were getting more and more expensive by the month, because people were speculating and buying homes, only to sell them a few months down the line. This is the time period when people famously flipped homes for a living, as the prices of homes were increasing day-by-day. As a result, the stock market was over-leveraged and the entire economy crashed in 2008. But this was the result of bad government policy. It was the result of crony capitalism. And this has NOTHING at all to do with Marx's critique. Crony capitalism is bad for everyone. And BTW, 1% of America owns about 37% of the wealth, not 90%. And there's a reason for that, I can't go into super-details, but it has to do with the Federal Reserve pumping money into the stock market (and because it's usually the rich 1% who owns stocks, then of course they will be the ones who benefit). You wanna target the root of the problem? Target the corrupt government and crony capitalism. What we're looking for saaxib, is EQUAL OPPORTUNITY, not EQUAL RESULTS. We have to agree that some people are more talented, more motivated, and more capable than others. This is a fact. So of course, the results will never be equal and any attempt we make to force that to happen ALWAYS ends in disaster. We want equal opportunity for all people, and we need to make sure that the Government is a fair referee which won't get involved in the marketplace, unless it's to create a few common-sense regulations (safety rules, fraud rules, etc.) Saaxib, the famine was man-made. A large number of the famines in the 20th century were man-made. Even the famines in Somalia in 1992 and 2011 were man-made. It was completely preventable but yet it still unfortunately occurred. We can't deny this. Land reforms are a very important concept, and it's what helped lead to the rapid development of the United States, Europe, China, India and other countries. Today, food is far far cheaper in China/America/India than it was a mere 50 years ago, even though the population has doubled. The same goes for other countries, and it's because of the government taking a step back and not being as involved.
DoctorKenney Posted September 4, 2014 And you're talking about "classes" and the White Man keeping the Black Man down. We need to have some pride here! The Black Americans have a $1 trillion spending power! You're acting as if they're all subjugated and unable to create their own independent economy! There's 45 million of them, which is a large consumer base. So tell me Khadafi, what is preventing the Black Man in 2014 from creating and developing his own industries? Why is a Chinaman able to do it but not the Black Man? Why is a Jew able to provide for himself but not us? Look at the Jews today, they hire each other, educate each other, and do business with each other. Yet they're not even 1/7th of the population of Black Americans. WE DON'T WANT White Capitalists to "share the wealth." We don't need them to share the wealth at all, we can create our own wealth. Wealth is created saaxib, from the ground up, as a result of manufacturing, production and value-adding services. The Whites don't have to "share" anything with us. We can create our own wealth and our own economy independent of them, which is what literally every other ethnic group in the world has done. Except us, except the Black Man. Because for some reason we think we're incapable. We need to stop with this victim mentality, it won't get us anywhere. We've tried this "victim mentality" for the last 50 years and complaining about our problems will never solve them. Did you ever hear the Noble Prophet complain about his problems, or was he proactive in his own life and in his own community? Allah will never change the state of the people until they first change what is in themselves. Have some self-confidence. Have some pride in your own people and what you can achieve. And we need to stop asking the cadaan man for a hand-out because we should be able to look out for ourselves. If the South Koreans who occupy a very small piece of land, smaller than Somaliland, can create their own corporations and manufacturing plants than we can do it too. DoctorKenney Posted September 4, 2014 Khadafi, Marx has long-ago been discredited. Yes there are problems with the global economy, but the forced collectivization of private property and private production is not the way to fix it. It's been tried before and it's led to massive failure each and every time. Just look at the differences between West Germany (free market) and East Germany (socialist). Or the differences between Poland (free market) and Ukraine (socialist). Or the differences between Chile (free market) and Venezuela (socialist). Or the differences between Botswana (free market) and Zimbabwe (socialist). Or the differences between Singapore (free market) and Jamaica (socialist). And what's funny is that Jamaica and Singapore were virtually equal in 1965. But now, the difference is like night and day. And it is pro-market policies in Singapore and Hong Kong which lead them to being extremely prosperous countries with a high standard of living not just for the rich, but for the middle class as well.
DoctorKenney Posted September 4, 2014 Saaxib, when the country grows richer, the poor also become much richer and have a higher standard of living, due to increased productivity. That's why a poor person in Singapore has a MUCH better lifestyle than a poor person in Bangladesh. The poor Singaporean still has a home, flush toilets, a TV, a cellphone, air-conditioner, refrigerator, a furnace, etc. These are things that a poor Bengali can only DREAM of having. It's all relative

You do realize that Blacks had their own businesses, their own colleges, their own supermarkets, and even their own Sports leagues back in the 1940's right? You're acting as if Blacks had ZERO WEALTH, which is not true. In fact, the income-gap between Blacks and Whites hasn't changed since 1970. So even 44 years later, we're not really any better off. You haven't really given me any argument as to why a Black Man, in the 2000's, is unable to provide for himself? Why not? Because his great great great grandfather was enslaved? Because his grandfather went through discrimination in the 1960's? Are you kidding me saaxib? Is this is an excuse for a Black Man not taking the initiative to improve himself and improve his own community? Why is it, that in the Black Community we find high crime rates, incidences of black drug dealers selling drugs to pregnant women, and run-down homes? Are we gonna blame that on slavery as well? Are you telling me the Black Man is incapable of fixing himself and fixing his own community? Why can't he be self-reliant? Your argument is that "Jamal" who lives in Atlanta can't improve his own community because his ancestors in the 1920's went through oppression and humiliation. Second of all, no one is against welfare for those who truly need it. This example you keep citing of a "single mom who works everyday" has nothing to do with this. Sure, there's plenty of them who do exist. And sure, they should receive government assistance to help them. I don't think you'll find anyone who's opposed to that. But this has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. Most of the problems which afflict the black community are self-inflicted. But as long as we keep "Blaming Whitey", we can ignore our own personal failures and keep making excuses as to why our children graduate high-school without even being able to read properly, why most black fathers aren't involved in their children's lives, and why most black communities are full of crime! You can't control the behavior of someone else, but you can control your own behavior. So we should focus on fixing ourselves first, and then we can talk about this "structural racism" that is always mentioned here.
