Bishii hore ayaa la qoray tan: Uganda’s AMISOM head, others suspended over corruption The Ugandan military has suspended 24 army officers after it emerged they were allegedly involved in corruption while posted as peacekeepers in war-torn Somalia. The Ugandan media reported on Tuesday, quoting an anonymous military source in Kampala saying the officers incriminated including the head of Uganda’s peacekeeping contingent in Somalia Brigadier Michael Ondoga have since been recalled and suspended as investigations open on the case. The Daily Monitor newspaper said the suspects are being probed for allegedly taking part in the black market dealing in foodstuff and fuel rationed for peacekeeping troops engaging Islamist insurgents in Somalia where some 18, 000 soldiers make up the AMISOM force. With a 6, 000-strong troop presence in Somalia, Uganda has the largest number of peacekeepers under AMISOM whose operations against al-Shabaab are funded by the United Nations and the European Union. Ondonga and 23 other Ugandan peacekeepers were recalled to Kampala following allegations of corrupt practices which were described as detrimental to military operations in Somalia. It was alleged that junior members of the Ugandan contingent were not paid and while foodstuff meant for them were allegedly sold. The Daily Monitor weighed in on the issue, claiming the country’s soldiers fighting in Somalia were fed once every day and blamed theft and the sale of foods meant for them as responsible for the situation. Meanwhile Ondonga’s appointment as Uganda’s military attaché to Kenya has been revoked by President Yoweri Museveni. Xigasho
