U.S. Will Spend $38.6 Million To Refurbish Port in Somalia

 

NAIROBI, Kenya — The United States has signed an agreement with Somalia to spend $38.6 million to refurbish the Indian Ocean port of Kismayu, the state-run Radio Mogadishu said today.

 

The broadcast, monitored in Nairobi, said Somalia would contribute $3.4 million toward the $42 million project.

 

The United States built the original port at Kismayu in 1964, but it was used by the Soviet Navy after a military coup in Somalia in 1969.
