Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn declared bi-partisan support for Somaliland in the case of military action against the threat from neighboring Somalia and other external militants such as al Shabab. The Prime Minister delivered the keynote speech this weekend in the Ethiopian Parliament in front of Ethiopian legislators. Mr. Desalegn specified that Ethiopia is ready to provide diplomatic, military, and economic support to Somaliland “should they need it”.“ Somaliland is a friend and a key strategic ally for Ethiopia. We will spare no expense to defend and protect Somaliland. We are ready to extend an arm of support to our Somaliland brothers every time they are in need of one, ” Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told the Parliamentarians. It was just weeks ago when Prime Minister Desalegn received the Somaliland President Ahmed Silanyo at his official residence in Addis Ababa. The two heads of State concurred on the enhancement of security, education and commercial ties. “Somaliland and Ethiopia share cordial relations of which we are determined to not only sustain but enhance as well, ” President Silanyo told Somaliland and Ethiopian reporters. http://www.tigraionline.com/articles/ethio-defend-somaliland.html
Saalax Posted May 22, 2013 The opinions of the mainstream Ethiopians on this. Halefom;953537 wrote: I support the PM on his firm stand making sure to our Enemies, Eritrea, Egypt, and the Al-shabab of South Somalia that if you mess with Ethiopian freienda we will take action to protect our assets and our freinds including military action so, think before you act. It also shows how strong he is despite ESATs false propaganda. Mark;953537 wrote: Egypt was behind the Eritrean independence, and now Egypt is making sure that Somaliland doesn't get independence. The former is to make Ethiopia disintegrate, and the later is to make somalia strong so that it can challenge Ethiopia. Everyone is looking for their national interest, and Ethiopia is should strengthen its diplomacy. Good job anyway! Zeyneba;953537 wrote: · Mark you are absolutly correct Egypt is behind most of the evil against Ethiopia, but Ethiopia seems aware of it now and doing something about it. We need support Somaliland as long as the people of Somaliland want independence it should be their right to become a separate country. They also have a historical right because they were not part of the Italian colony they were part of the British colony. Berhanu;953537 wrote: I think it is big mistake that Ethiopia not recognise Somaliland state. There is two good reason first Somaliland pple are friendliest pple of Ethiopia has with in the region, secondly Somaliland and Ethiopia has common enemy of Egypt. Biletaral relation and recognition of Somaliland mean strong Ethiopia. Jay;953537 wrote: I welcome this development. Ethiopia and Somaliland are not only common allies but they go back long way. Ethiopia can not recognize Somaliland for legal reasons (neighbor) but supporting Somaliland until it achieves its recognition is a great move. We will have one more friend in a hostile region. A friend is never prized nor questioned. We welcome the Prime Minister's wise foreign policy and it will be one that keeps Ethiopia's dominance in the region. If Somaliland returns to Somalia, united Somalia is a formidable rivalry. The West, Arabs and even Turkey wants to restore united Somalia so they can harass Ethiopia. They call this regional balance of powers in their diplomatic language. If we don't support Somaliland in its hour of need then they will not be a friend nor will they allow us any port usage. Somaliland income does not so much depend on port like Djibouti. They can go back to Somalia and diversify their income example petroleum, livestock, etc. berhane;953537 wrote: Here is the main reason: Somaliland provides a dependable buffer to Djibouti from whatever kind of trouble that might arise from any kind of groups or unfriendly countries. Indirectly speaking, Ethiopia will do everything, including force, to defend Djibouti, and the strategy for defending Djibouti starts with Somaliland. And by the way, what is the world waiting for to recognise Somaliland as an independent country? Is the world waiting for bloodshed? Any difference b/n peaceful Somaliland and war ravaged kosovo? Recognition is the answer and I think Ethiopia is going to be the first to do so.
Saalax Posted May 22, 2013 Interesting. It seems most mainstream Ethiopians know it is Egypt and some other Arab countries that is pushing for a united Somalia so they can harass Ethiopia , as a result most of them are in favor of Somaliland recognition,
Xaaji Xunjuf Posted May 22, 2013 Ethiopians are scared of Egyptians, Egypt has motives and we know why they have blocked SL recognition. But if the Ethiopians are serous they should recognize Somaliland independence. But most of the time they are not sincere because no one needs their protection its much about nothing. The African union guarded government is toothless there is no threat coming from the pirates either.

It is all about interests, it is in the legal sense Ethiopia can't make that move yet (they have their own issues with secession inside their borders) among , but it is good that they realize a united Somalia being by the likes of Egypt is Danger to them. Saalax Posted May 23, 2013 Che Is one strange kid. His country of origin Somalia loves Ethiopians so much that they welcomed Ethiopian tanks into their capital Mogadishu back in 2006, they also operate in Beledweyne, Central Somalia, Gedo etc in recent years yet he has to audacity to try to accuse others.
