South Sudan moves soldiers to Sudan region

South Sudan has moved some of its troops back to the border zone to protect civilians, an official said on Thursday.

 

The move comes days after the country's Dinka chief, Kual Deng Majok, and several other people were killed by Sudan Arab Misseriya militias in the disputed Abyei region.

 

“We have moved some of the smaller units to protect the civilians until the time that the United Nations peacekeeping forces or African Union will have the mechanism to manage the buffer zone,” said army spokesman, Colonel Philip Aguer Panyang.

 

“You cannot create a buffer zone that you cannot protect,” he told a local radio station.

 

This confirmed a report from Satellite Sentinel Project headed by the American actor and activist George Clooney, which said captured images indicated that Sudan and South Sudan had moved troops into the buzzer zone in violation of previous agreements.

 

Sudan has, however, denied that it violated the agreement, saying that even the joint border monitoring and verification mechanism the two parties had established to oversee the buffer zone had not recorded any complaint about the alleged violation.

 

“This is not true, we as the armed forces are still outside the buffer zone as agreed in Addis Ababa Agreement,” Sudan Armed Forces spokesman Alkhaled Sahad.

 

Both sides had withdrawn 10km from each side of the undefined border to establish a 20km safe demilitarised zone.

 

Tensions have been easing between the two former foes, with a promise of mutual cooperation.

 

The killing of the Dinka Ng’ok Abyei chief on Saturday is, however, a new challenge the two sides are trying to contain.
