SayidSomal Posted April 18, 2013 Rumor has it that the British government is pushing an idea of Somaliland having a devolved government that deals with everything internal affairs with complete independence from Somalia apart from foreign affairs whilst having a stake in Somalia's affairs too - Similar to Scotland and future referendum on independence with agreement with the Somali government. This idea is being championed by William Hague secretary of the British foreign and commonwealth department. This is supposedly a step up from federal state. NGONGE Posted April 18, 2013 ^^ That's South Sudan too. A referendum was always on the agenda.
SayidSomal Posted April 18, 2013 The question is will either of the Somali parties accept that though?
NGONGE Posted April 18, 2013 ^^ I reckon Somaliland will accept a referendum. I'm not sure about them agreeing to share anything with Somalia in the meanwhile. As for Hassan Sheikh, not even the Imam could guess what that guy is up to.
SayidSomal Posted April 18, 2013 Not so fast Oodweyne - referendum in the far future, one which Somali government will be able to campaign for the union. I think Somaliland is more likely to accept this idea then the Somali government as it enables them to have their cake and eat it too.
Tallaabo Posted April 18, 2013 The Scottish model? No thank you.
Xaaji Xunjuf Posted April 18, 2013 Sayid qardho somaliland could only accept thIs if a un supervised referendum is given with in the next 3 years longer than that is unacceptable. South sudan was 5 years eritrea was 2 years somaliland max 3 years.
NGONGE Posted April 18, 2013 ^^ Isn't that what I said above. SL will probably agree to a referendum but doubt if they'll agree to anything else.
xiinfaniin Posted April 18, 2013 A referendum is must. In any meaningful conclusion to the Somaliland's independence stance, one thing that the unionists must acknowledge is the fact that significant portion of former British Somaliland population want to secede, and expressed that aspiration in a referendum. So Hassan Sheekh has to concede that point. The question is who will participate in such referendum ? Yey talada kala goynta Somaliya ka go'daa? We argue rather convicingly , It is all of Somali people that must weigh in any referendum regarding the territorial unity of the country.
xiinfaniin Posted April 18, 2013 ^Oodweyne, I am sure you knew all along (despite the seemingly hard stance) that it will come down to a referendum. And the argument the unionists will have will not be no-to-referendum, at least it should not be, for the numbers are on their side, and with petro-money filling in the New Blood's pockets, the unionists should be comfortable with this idea. Rather it will be all Somali people should decide the fate of the republic. If you didn't at least anticipate such argumentation, you are not from a Yonis Mother blood--they were known for thier guurti tradition
Saalax Posted April 18, 2013 A referendum for Somaliland will only have a concern for ex British Somaliland inhabitants, shall the vote is held.
xiinfaniin Posted April 18, 2013 ^^ :D ku noqo. Haddii kale saadanbaad garan. It will come down to a Somalia wide referendum. It has to. Other wise we the pirates will intervene
Suldaanka Posted April 18, 2013 ^ The Pirate Boys have learned it the hard way camo. They ain't gonna coming back. With regards to your Referendum idea, it is just laughable. Any future referendum will be solely limited to within the former British Somaliland borders. When that happens, there will be border guards checking whether you can say "Tidhi" or "Tiri"... Xiinow make sure you practice "Tidhi/Yidhi" in your day to day Somali - that is if you want to vote NO.
xiinfaniin Posted April 18, 2013 :D @ Suldaan & Oodweyne As if the pirates have shrewdly and collectively decided to prepare such an event, I have observed a significant increase in pirate boys marrying Hargeysa girls. Of course this strategy hinges on our brothers in the North remaining culturally observant as they have traditionaly been, treating their pirate in-laws with respect
Xaaji Xunjuf Posted April 18, 2013 Voter registrations a year prior to the referendum That way it wil be only somalilanders voting not pirates koonfurians shabaabians defeated lot all will be disqualified And a referendum means only for the somaliland people from lawya cado to yoocade
