The economy crashed because of the Federal Reserve lowering interest rates, the Government lowering home lending standards, and the Government creating a housing bubble. The government distorted the market and that's what crashed the economy. Don't start this debate. You will lose. The 2008 crash had nothing to do with capitalism

If it helps you to think of me as a Socialist, Communist, Anarchist or whatever (not that you seem to know what those positions entail), feel free to do so. But I'm not letting you derail the thread by making it about my personal politics.

Safferz, ur undoubtedly an intelligent and well-informed person who brings a lot of value to Sol's intellectual environment. But at times, like in the above post, u come across a tad bit condescending in your choice of words. Such a style will only shift the debate from an honest exchange and critique of ideas and positions, to one where egos reign supreme as each person becomes defensive and tries to reinforce his/her superority at whatever cost, sacrificing objectivity and the pursuit of truth in exchange for a perceived victory. Haatu Posted April 8, 2013 She was a racist and very haughty in her dealings with the poor. As for the capitalism vs socialism debate, it is only logical that each man has the liberty to gain and amass wealth using whatever avenues he wishes (so long as it's legal) and has the right to spend it as he sees fit. It is not the place of the state or anyone else for that matter to dictate to him how he should manage his wealth. With that said, in no shape or form do I support the immoral (and riba filled) practices of the greedy bankers that led to the credit crunch. As for nation development, the state should only focus on providing the key infrastructure and vital social services as well as enforcing regulations. It should then let the private sector do what it does best: make money. The state should in no way show favouritism to one sector over another (excluding subsidies to farmers to make them globally competitive) and should limit protectionism to as little as possible. Protecting useless, unsustainable industries does nobody any benefit, better to let foreigners come in and teach domestic enterprises how the job is done. I match my tone with what's already been directed towards me by a particular person. Take a look at xabad's posts in this thread.
