Did you guess it right? It has been in the hot deserts of Libya... in the dramatic scenes of Syria... But it began its life in Somalia....

The technical must be the most succsessfull somali invention in term of it use abroad. ;) According to wikipedia the definition of the term TEEKNIKO is "

a vehicle originated in Somalia in the early 1990s. Barred from bringing in private security, non-governmental organizations hired local gunmen to protect their personnel, using money defined as "technical assistance grants". Eventually the term broadened to include any vehicle carrying armed men.[1] Technicals have also been referred to as battlewagons, gunwagons,[2] or gunships.

We should start production of the technical. Import cheap Landcruisers for 8000 dollar, put a big gun on it and sell them as technical battle wagons for 40.000 dollar.

Short of history eh ??? ,,,,,,,, It begun in 1982 in Somaliland and by 1988, SNM had hundreds of those. The Siad Barre Government made it is first "Baroon" in mid 80s .....

But I agree with you, It is a Somali invention anyway ,,,, :D

^ For them the civil war started in 1991. Prior to that life was blissful and they cared little about what was happening in the far alien world of the North. They were just like the American citizens who will struggle to find Iraq on the world map despite their army obliterating that nation.

Jb....There was no Somaliland in 1982, atleast get the history right.

Tallaabo...I thought your struggle was war of independence ergo not part of the Somali civil war.

The war in the north of the former republic was not about the independence of Somaliland. There is no Somaliland in SNM, it was Somali National Movement. The SNM 's agenda was never about the secession of Somaliland but was about the overthrow of Siyad Barre's tyrannical regime. It was only when Siyad's forces were expelled from the north and the disillusioned and very angry refugees returned that the civilians demanded the restoration of Somaliland's independence. The SNM leaders who were all getting ready to go to Mogadisho and help establish and new central government there had no choice but to oblige. So yes the war in the north of the former republic was part of the Somali civil war.
