oba hiloowlow Posted March 6, 2013 (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council agreed on Wednesday to lift a decades-old arms embargo on Somalia's government for one year, allowing the country to buy light weapons in a bid to strengthen its security forces to combat al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters. The resolution, unanimously adopted by the 15-member council, leaves in place a ban on surface-to-air missiles, larger-caliber guns, howitzers, cannons and mortars, anti-tank guided weapons, mines and night vision weapon sights. nuune Posted March 6, 2013 What is the point of lifting this if I cannot buy gantaal, saaruukh, kanooni, jiib, shlke, suug, taransatate, beebee, taangi, nuclear, dhashiike, iyo mindi
NGONGE Posted March 6, 2013 ^^ Do you think "Xiin" will be happy with that?
Taleexi Posted March 6, 2013 Letting every clan to import weapons may not be a wise thing to do. Managing, collecting and controlling the arms we've already have should be a matter of importance.

xiinfaniin Posted March 6, 2013 UK watered down the original request ---the embargo is lifted in name only. But this is a major victory for the government in Mogadishu.
NGONGE Posted March 6, 2013 ^^ Surely a victory for both sides of the argument.

NGONGE Posted March 6, 2013 Resolution 2093 allows for a one-year suspension of the embargo when small arms will be allowed. The Security Council pointedly listed surface-to-air missiles, guns, howitzers and cannons and related ammunition and components as items that cannot be sold to Somalia. The government will have to give at least five days notice of deliveries, and purchases will be monitored by U.N. experts. Hmmm.
