GoldCoast Posted March 1, 2013 McLEAN, Va. — Somalia’s newly recognized government is asking the State Department to grant immunity to a former prime minister accused of human-rights abuses. The letter issued this week by the Federal Republic of Somalia seeks immunity for Mohamed Ali Samantar, who now lives in Fairfax but was a top official in dictator Siad Barre’s regime. Last year, a federal judge in Virginia awarded seven Somali victims a $21 million judgment against Samantar for orchestrating a campaign of torture and killings against members of the ***** (ee-SOCK’) clan. At the time, Samantar was denied immunity because there was no functioning government to claim immunity on his behalf. In January, the U.S. formally recognized the Somali government. Samantar’s attorney said he expects the U.S. to honor Somalia’s request and the case to be dismissed. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/somalia-newly-recognized-by-us-seeks-immunity-for-former-minister-samantar-in-civil-case/2013/03/01/6291d940-82a9-11e2-a671-0307392de8de_story.html

Somalia Posted March 1, 2013 The Marwo is taking revenge on the Somaliland establishment at the expense of the Somaliland people's feelings and trauma they've experienced. I for one am very saddened by the dirty politicking she is conducting!

Somalia Posted March 1, 2013 That's even worse, a Kacaan-made man protecting a failed legacy, if Somaliland doesn't respond with appropriate actions, I just, well I just don't know what to think anymore.

Naxar Nugaaleed Posted March 2, 2013 Good job to the Somali government, let whoever holds a three decade long grudge can keep holding it, suing and ill elderly man was in very bad taste and driven by greed more then anything. Reconciliation can only be done with Somalis talking to each other rather then foreign courts.
Saalax Posted March 2, 2013 "The Somali prime minister’s request for immunity for Samantar goes to the State Department. If the State Department decides to honor it, it would be up to a court to dismiss the case. In rejecting Samantar’s immunity claim last year, the appeals court said the executive branch’s recommendation is a big factor in determining immunity, but not the only one. It also said abuses such as torture and extrajudicial killings, like those Samantar was accused of, may never be eligible for protection."

Of course we have different motives but still it is something we both are happy to see happened. Hence lets hope you will understand why we have nothing but a contempt for the verbal merchant who go on about some such somali unity and other malarkey. All in all I am glad for the first time in here of SOL we find an issue we are both glad to see come to our attention. Oodka, Mar-mar qaarkood waa inaad FAR WAAWEYN ugu qortid...
