Somaliland, Khaatumo State forces clash in Hudun district, Sool, Somalia

A heavy fighting between militias loyal to the newly formed Khatumo administration and Somaliland forces has reportedly erupted West of Hudun district, Sool region, late on Tuesday night.

 

It is not yet known what has really triggered the fight but reports say the fighting which took place in Lafweyn settlement, Some 20 kilometres west of Hudun town, occurred when Somaliland troops attacked Khatumo military base in the area.

 

Khatumo’s Internal Security minister Mohamed Duale Abdi told Bar-kulan that they inflicted heavy casualties on Somaliland troops and repelled them, claiming that their forces suffered no casualties.

 

He accused Somaliland troops for destabilizing the region and harassing locals loyal to his one-year-old Khatumo regional state.

 

Somaliland has not yet commented on the incident.

 

The newly declared Khaatumo state is near the border with Ethiopia and is a disputed area that Somaliland seized from Puntland in 2007, though relations between the two territories have improved since.

 

Fighting between Khatumo and Somaliland first erupted in January 2012 after the leaders of the northern regions of Sool, Sanaag and Cayn decided to band together into a new state called Khatumo and declared they wanted to be an independent region within Somalia.

 

Somaliland’s troops have since clashed with militia fighters loyal to Khatumo, with reports of dozens of casualties.

 

Somaliland which has unilaterally declared its independence from the rest of Somalia after the fall of Somalia’s central government is facing resistance from a local clan loyal to Khatumo.

As soon as Somaliland gets recognition, they should promise to conduct a free and fair referendum among the unionist clans and let them go if they choose to. But before the referendum, Somaliland should give itself enough time to entice those clans to stay.

Saddly the only salution to this is the battlefield. Wither it's do to incompetence or just hard headedness, Somaliland will not heed the call of these people to be left alone and it's just not in the Somali character to Capitulate.

Such skirmishes do a great disservice to the secessionist agenda Silanyo wants to sell the western powers. Silanyo will do well NOT to be labeled a political spoiler in this point and time in Somalia.
