Kooshin is up there among the greats. he's version of heesta indha deeraley is a classic. abdi tahlil is awersome too. heesta dunidan is fantastic. abdiaziz jarmal is the best of the new qaraami musicians. khadra dahir's mahiigaan is one of my personal favourites. Most people associate qaraami with "old" and I agree with you definitions are good. In my mind, they are simple songs with a simple instrument like the oud/kaban, maybe plus a drum and a beautiful voice.
