Britons urged to leave Somaliland

All British nationals in Somaliland should leave immediately because of "a specific threat to Westerners", the UK Foreign Office has said.

 

It was already advising Britons in Somalia, including Somaliland, to leave, but has reviewed and reissued its advice in light of the threat.

 

It says kidnapping "motivated by criminality or terrorism" remains a threat throughout Somalia.

 

Last week, a similar warning was issued for Britons to leave Libya's Benghazi.

 

There were a number of non-governmental organisations, staffed by Westerners, that worked in Somaliland, a Foreign Office (FCO) spokesman told the BBC News website.

 

"We are now aware of a specific threat to Westerners in Somaliland and urge any British nationals who remain there against our advice to leave immediately," the FCO said in a statement.

 

It said it would not comment on the nature of the threat.

 

'Terrorist groups'

 

The FCO website warns that in the southern and central regions of Somalia "there is ongoing serious violence, dangerous levels of criminal activity and general internal insecurity".

 

It says attacks "could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers".

 

And it adds: "Following the death of Osama Bin Laden, terrorist groups operating in Somalia have made threats against Westerners and those working for Western organisations in Somalia, including Somaliland."

 

The northern territory of Somaliland broke away from Somalia in 1991 and wants to remain separate from the rest of the country.

 

But Mogadishu wants Somaliland to be part of a single Somali state.

 

Somaliland unilaterally declared independence after the overthrow of Siad Barre - who led Somalia's last functioning national government.

 

Last week, the FCO urged Britons to leave Benghazi immediately in response to a "specific, imminent threat" to Westerners.

 

Libya's deputy interior minister Abdullah Massoud responded by insisting the security problems in Benghazi did not warrant such a response.

 

The threat of terrorism in Africa was highlighted by a four-day siege at a gas plant near the town of In Amenas, in eastern Algeria, earlier this month which is believed to have left six British hostages dead.

Oodweyne, As far as I know, AS hasn't issued any threat nor has it been known to target Brits . The rescue debacle by the French was good propaganda but nothing more. Their man power and resource is poured into the South apart from the few in Golis mountains giving headache to Faroole's admin. Unless there's some intelligence to suggest Somaliland is being infiltrated by AS, this whole thing is unwarranted.

 

On the larger point, it looks like there's new scramble for Africa and former colonial powers are dividing the continent along their spheres of influence in the former colonies. The rush for Africa's resources is on!

This news should be taken seriously, hopefully nothing happens, they might know something and will say "we did our due diligence" after the outcome.

I'm very concerned for the welfare of Somaliland at this current moment. Habar on habar violence with Jesus side play is not great for the reputation of Somaliland and this is just another catastrophe in the public relations of the independent state.

 

I think this is part of a Mogadishu conspiracy with foreign powers to make Somaliland seem unstable. A deal must have been made with the British, probably by the secessionist foreign minister to make this announcement. What is her motive? Is she hurt over how she was treated due to having neo-HAG children? Is it personal? Only time will tell.

Take off the tin-foil hat and stop listening to Alex Jones. That is the most illogical conspiracy Ive heard. Would you really think that the FM would wield that kind of influence over the security policy of the UK, also the travel ban affects Somalia as well which is clearly not in their interest

 

Its basically an overreaction to sabre rattling made by AS looking for relevance by claiming they are about to launch fresh attacks against western targets

Err..after the recent Algeria stiuation when Western countries were accused of being slow to react and the Algerians showed that local forces are not to be trusted with any hostage situations, it makes sense for the Brits to issue such a warning to any waxha la yedhi news they hear.
