Rebel troops of the Somali United Congress (USC) took control of Mogadishu, after a three week long war with Government troops. SNM Meanwhile, SNM forces have pushed the front towards the east by taking Odweina on February 15 and Ainabo, 120 km east of Burao on the road by Mogadishu, at the end of the month. They claimed to have killed over 1,000 SNA soldiers in 1988. The SNM liberated Ceerigaabo also in 1989. The Somali National Movement (SNM) gained control of the north, while in the capital of Mogadishu and most of southern Somalia, the United Somali Congress achieved control.
