Oodweyne, what do you gain from such petty divisive talk? Their is nothing wrong with Puntland going to Mogadishu as a "supplicant". Puntland is a state within the Federal Republic of Somalia, and Mogadishu is the seat of that Federal government.

It never too late to end this them-against-us mentality of yours. Time to move forward my brother. No point in exaggerating talk of who got power and who doesn't. The federal systems is meant to ensure equity among the respective polities of Somalia including yours. Am not saying its perfect but it will get there. We gonna first have to neuter and spay divisive old men like you throughout Somalia. Old men who refuse to abandon backward and primitive ways of interacting with their fellow countrymen. :D

Puntland welcomes U.S. recognition of Somalia's new government

20 Jan 20, 2013 - 9:37:09 PM

GAROWE, Somalia Jan. 20, 2013 (Garowe Online) - Somalia 's Puntland government says it welcomes the U.S. government 's official diplomatic recognition of the Somali Federal Government, Garowe Online reports.

A press statement published today states that the U.S. has not recognized any national government in Somalia since 1991, while noting U.S. recognition as "a courageous and historic step in advancing U.S.-Somalia relations ".

Continuing, the statement said that Puntland shares its "commendations with the U.S. Government, the Somali President [Hassan Sheikh Mohamud], and the people of Somalia as a whole ".

The Puntland government statement noted the autonomous regio n 's contribution to the political process in Somalia to end the transitional period, while underling that the Puntland government "continues to contribute positively to strengthening peace, security and stability across Somalia ".

Puntland called on the U.S. and other international partners "to continue supporting peace and stabilization, humanitarian aid, good governance, and economic development programs " in Somalia.

The statement stressed the Puntland government 's expectations of the Somali Federal Government, which came to power in August 2012, noting in particular the issues of advancing federalism, fair allocation of international assistance to Somalia, promoting national reconciliation, and establishing the Upper House of the Somali Federal Parliament in accordance with the Somali Federal Constitution, the statement read.

The statement concluded with a congratulatory mention of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "for her valued accomplishments during her years in public service ".

Secretary Clinton met Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Washington, D.C., on January 17, where Secretary Clinton fo rmal ly announced U.S. diplomatic recognition of a national government in Somalia for the first time since 1991.

The Puntland government statement indicates the autonomous region 's support for the U.S. role in Somalia. The U.S. is among key nations in the world funding the AMISOM peacekeeping mission in Somalia, which has aided Somali government forces i n expelling Al Shabaab militants from key towns in south-central Somalia since 2011.

On January 10, U.S. Special Representative to Somalia Ambassador James Swan visited Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole in Bossaso for discussions on a range of issues and to promote relations.

:D

Both Che, a known terrorist sympathizer and the queen's grandchild have something in common today aside from their obvious contempt for Puntland's support for the federal government, they both represent the remnants of a weakened ideology. One's secession dream has collapsed beyond recognition, a supposed president who is undermined by his own cabinet, an opposition leader which openly wants to defy the constitution of the region, while the other is running from bush to bush and ironically the youth abandoning the ever so ungodly movement.

So you should give them a hand, rub their shoulder during this troubled time, and try and understand why they want to move focus. :D

All that is true, Senor Somalia. These old men whose corrupt ideology has been found wanting by the Somali people are similar to a horse in its last throes. A dying horse's last kicks, as you know, may be dangerous but the point is... scream after scream and squall after squall, it gets weaker before it finally succumbs.

I assure, the days of old men like these who have held Somalia down are numbered. Soon museums will be erected in Somalia where visitors will be encouraged to reflect upon the rise and fall of such haters of peace and unity.:D

Somalia: A smiling new President for a country in desperation [Editorial]

2 Dec 2, 2012 - 6:22:32 AM

GAROWE ONLINE EDITORIAL | President Hassan's "Manifesto" provides no vision for a national political system that has matured and benefited from the wise counsel of the bitter lessons of Somalia's troubled past.

Somalis are famous for attaching nicknames to each other. Within a few weeks of his election via parliamentary vote as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, held in Mogadishu on Sept. 10, 2012, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was nicknamed Hassan 'Qoslaye', or Hassan 'Smiley' in English.

Photographs posted by state-run Radio Mogadishu website highlighting President Hassan's trip to Ethiopia last week include a revealing photograph of President Hassan sitting in the cockpit of an Ethiopian Airlines jet, smiling back at the camera. One hopes that, President Hassan is not as ill prepared to fly an airplane, as he is to lead a nation.

Recently, President Hassan was visited by a mission dispatched by the U.N. Security Council to conduct an assessment of the U.N. mandate in post-transition Somalia. President Hassan undiplomatically handed the visiting U.N. team a 5-page document referred to as the "Manifesto" that he first published during the runner-up to the Sept. 10 election. The Manifesto contains President Hassan's vision while he was a presidential candidate; the "Six Pillar Policy" aims to "outline a public policy framework that sheds light on the top most priority issues and lay strong foundations for building reliable and functioning state institutions". By promoting that same document as President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has stamped his national vision for Somalia – a vision that, while it enshrines principles of governance and humanity, lacks the political depth that can deliver even a part of that vision and help Somalia recover from the ruins of war.

No wonder President Hassan has been obsessively preoccupied with issues relating to the formation of 'Jubaland' administration in southern Somalia or receiving foreign delegations in Mogadishu, thereby sidelining the Prime Minister, instead of widening his focus to tackle priority national issues.

The "Manifesto" includes clauses on security and national political system that seem to apply to all levels of government, and to all parts of Somalia. Naturally, any policy that aims to apply in parts of Somalia is shortsighted, impractical, and is more than likely to produce counter-productive results. His Manifesto calls for "establishment of regional and district security committees" from the center – or in this case, from the federal government in Mogadishu. Some have speculated that ex-President Abdiqassim Salat Hassan is a "close adviser" of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. With such centralist line of thought, one ponders the validity of the speculation.

More over, President Hassan's "Manifesto" provides no vision for a national political system that has matured and benefited from the wise counsel of the bitter lessons of Somalia's troubled past. For example, the Manifesto makes no mention of federalism, and fails to posit propositions on how to deal with the secession of Somaliland, equaling the dismemberment of Somalia. Instead, President Hassan was caught commending the "Somaliland government and its people" for last week's local elections. While Somaliland should be commended for holding local elections, Somaliland should be equally criticized for using "military democracy" in Sool and Sanaag regions that support Puntland and remaining part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Somaliland is well-known for sending election teams carrying ballot boxes, accompanied by military forces.

President Hassan's message is similar to a message that a Somali President would express for elections in Kenya, or France. Are "Somaliland and its people" the same people Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is the President for, or has Hassan forfeited his authority as President of Somalia?

Many things remain unclear, but President Hassan's smile will not save Somalia. Long gone is the euphoria of a peaceful election on Sept. 10, and now, the country needs visionary leadership to steer Somalia on the path towards national reconciliation, recovery, and rebuilding of a new Somalia, and deliver tangible results before public confidence dissipates.

Faroole and his Puntland understood the political chess well before our brothers in the North started taking the 101 course in London. Puntland's foot print is in the constitution, they were major stakeholders, and played a prominent role in shaping how Somalia settles the civil war and ends the transition.

I trust Oodweyne knows that much. Why would anyone feigns surprise in Puntland welcoming US recognition while it was apparent the whole objective of ending the transition was to gain recognition is beyond me. Some people need to give Puntland some credit methinks.

^^No. You are wrong here.

Puntland expected the world recognition post transition and sees it as a victory for Somalia. Internal politicking ala Kismayo, federalism is something Puntland proudly plays very well, but national achievement like the one announced last week in Washington is a shared milestone for all Somalis.

You must admire secretly the political skills of those you call 'pirate-lan' :D

You should learn from them; they have achieved two political milestones of national priority flawlessly, 1) containing SNM phantasy lest they continue the madness of closing an artificial border, 2) rescuing the USC type in Mogadishu from the twenty year gloom they found themselves in after declaring to have vanquished certain communities from the political parlance of the country.

Oodweyne, believe me despite NGONGE's effort to moderate your cynicism, you will be proved right that the recognition bid of Somaliland will be conclusively declared as null and void in a manner of months , not years. And someone will have to be credited for that unionist accomplishment :D...
