Xaaji Xunjuf Posted January 9, 2013 Former British Rail cleaner is named president of Zambia 24 Sep 2011 00:00 A FORMER British Rail cleaner was yesterday declared the new *president of Zambia. Michael Sata (Pic: Getty Images) A FORMER British Rail cleaner was yesterday declared the new *president of Zambia. Michael Sata, who was believed to have worked in Victoria Station, South West London, was sworn in as head of the southern African state. The 74-year-old, nicknamed King Cobra because of his quick temper and sharp tongue, ousted his homeland’s ruling party after rising from an early career as a platform cleaner and porter with Britain’s nationalised rail company and also as an assembly worker in several factories here. Mr Sata has rarely spoken about his time in the UK but is known to have travelled to England after being born in 1936. The polling last Tuesday was marred by violence and at least two people died. Defeated Rupiah Banda’s Movement for Multi-party Democracy party had ruled since 1991 but Mr Sata’s Patriotic Front won by 43% to 36% after appealing to the millions of poor Zambians who have not benefited from recent economic growth. The new president called for peace between rival parties. He said: “We should not allow violence to separate us. The gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider and we need to address that. Now is the time to unite and build tomorrow’s Zambia together. “I stand by the promise to change Zambia within 90 days.” Mr Sata had returned to his homeland and entered politics shortly before the ex-British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia won independence in 1964, becoming Zambia. The devout Catholic, a father of eight, had served as a minister under Mr Banda for years but quit the ruling party in 2001 to form the opposition Patriotic Front. You need to orient SOLers that RAO means Raila Amolo Odinga, and the polls show a narrow lead of between 4% and 8%. I am convinced there will be a re-run; he can't have a clean win unless something dramatic happens in the next 6 weeks. And yes I know a thing or two about Kenyan politics...
