Recommended Posts

Liibaan

Gunmen shot dead a Somali journalist in the northern town of Las Anod on Tuesday (October 23rd), AFP reported, bringing the number of journalists killed in Somalia this year to 17.

Ahmed Farah Ilyas, 25, worked with London-based independent Universal TV. "He was heading home in Las Anod when three men armed with handguns shot him several times," said colleague Feysal Jama. "He died instantly and the gunmen escaped."

The attack comes two days after gunmen seriously wounded Shabelle Media Network journalist Mohamed Mohamud Tuuryare in Mogadishu.

Local police official Dahir Adan confirmed the killing and said that while police were investigating the attack, no arrests had been made.

Ilyas had been arrested several times by Somaliland police and released without charges each time, according to Somalia's RBC Radio. On October 12th, Somaliland briefly held Ilyas and two other journalists, accusing them of airing programmes in support of newly appointed Somali Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon.

Las Anod is controlled by Somaliland authorities, but is part of contested territory.

Somaliland had briefly detained Ahmed, along with two other journalists, on October 12 in connection with their coverage of Las Anod residents expressing their support for the new Somali prime minister, Abdi Farah Shirdon, according to local reports.

Khatumo Journalists Association (KHAJA) Condemns the killing of Journalist Ahmed Farah Ilyas

In a press conference released this morning in Mogadishu, the President of Khatumo Journalists Association (KHAJA) Suleiman Hashi Dheere expressed grave concerns about the death of fellow Journalist Ahmed Farah Ilyas who was assassinated yesterday in Lasanod City. Suleiman sent his prayers, sympathies and condolences to the family of Ahmed Farah and to all Jouranlists in Somalia specially those in Khatumo State.

“It was only four nights ago when Ahmed told me on the phone how he felt scared after having been arrested on Oct. 12th 2012 by the Secessionists” stated Suleiman. "Constant threats and abuse of power was exercised by this administration due to his stance on freedom of press in support of the women of Lasanod” added Suleiman.

Additionally, “The Lasanod Administration sent an invitation yesterday to all Journalists in the city allegedly for a press conference. However, the Journalists including Ahmed Farah have boycotted this invitation in retaliation and for fear of their lives due to the arrests and the abuse the journalists suffered at the hands of ruthless police and military personnel on Oct. 12th” continued Suleiman

While Khatumo Journalists Association plans to conduct its own independent investigation on the cause of death of their Journalist Ahmed Farah Ilyas, KHAJA calls on Human Rights organizations, Amnesty International, and Press organizations including IFJ, IAJ to condemn and demand that the perpetrators and murderers who [according to Suleiman] could be hiding behind military compounds in Lasanod] be brought to justice.

EU Envoy Condemns Killing of Journalist in Somalia

2012-10-25

The EU special envoy to Somalia, Michele Cervone d'Urso, on Thursday condemned the killing of another Somali journalist in the Somaliland town of Las Anod this week.

Ahmed Farah Ilyas, a correspondent for the private, London- based Universal TV, was killed Tuesday while walking home from work at around 9 p.m local time. The gunmen fled the scene before the Somaliland police arrived.

"I want to pay my respect to those media workers attacked while carrying out their duty and I call upon the relevant authorities to investigate these cases with urgency," Cervone said in a statement issued in Nairobi.

The latest murder brings to 16 the toll of media workers killed in Somalia in 2012 and yet, not a single person has been brought to justice for the killings of journalists in Somalia.

"I reiterate the importance of freedom of expression for genuine peace and state building in Somalia that has taken new impetus with the new political order," the envoy added.

The 25-year-old Ilyas had worked as a journalist for more than 8 years and was the Las Anod representative of the Somaliland Journalists Association. Hours before his death, he had reported on a bomb blast that authorities blamed on Islamic insurgents.

Cervone expressed his sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Ilyas whose death is the latest in the Horn of Africa.

He said the EU is a steadfast supporter of the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms like the freedom of expression.

"That is why, together with the Members States, the EU has developed a Local Implementation Strategy for Human Right Defenders in Somalia. This strategy provides the EU with a tool for more systematic protection of cases of intimidation and threats against for instance journalists," he added.

The restive town of Las Anod straddles the border between Somaliland and the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, where skirmishes between forces loyal to both regions occasionally occur.

UN Special Representative for Somalia statement on attacks against journalists

October 24, 2012 15:37

The Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral for Somalia, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga deplores the recent targeted attacks against Somali journalists.

On Tuesday Ahmed Saakin Farah Ilyas, a correspondent with Universal TV was shot dead in the town of Las-Anod in Sool region.

On 21st October Mohamed Mohamud Tuuryare, a journalist working for the Shabelle media network in Mogadishu was shot and is still in a critical condition.

“I condemn these horrific attacks in the strongest terms. Trying to silence the media will have a devastating effect on the nation’s vibrant media community.

These attacks must stop and the crimes must be fully investigated by the Somali and Somaliland authorities,” SRSG Mahiga said.

“I send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ahmed Farah Ilyas and I wish Mr. Mohamed Tuurayare a quick and full recovery,” SRSG Mahiga said.

Somalia is one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists to operate, with 2012 being one of the bloodiest years on record for the country’s media industry. Sixteen Somali journalists have been killed this year alone and more than 20 reportedly injured.

“I call on the authorities to bolster their criminal investigation capacity and bring the perpetrators to justice. UNPOS stands ready to assist in this regard,” SRSG Mahiga added
