The cause for the failure of the union of Somaliland and Somalia

Each year Somalis celebrate the anniversary of the Somali Youth League which falls on 15th May. They sing the famous song,

“Soomaaliyey Toosoy, Toosoy Isku Tiirsada; Hadba Kiina Taag Daranee, Taageera Weligiina” (Somalis, stand up; Stand up and lean on each other; And Help anyone who is in need)

Not only do we sing but stand up as a mark of respect. Most of the people go to the venues where celebrations are held and sing with others. Some of them might have only heard of the SYL through friends or families. Most of the Somalis hardly know the true history of the party, the good and harm it has done to the national interest. Nevertheless, we are all convinced that the SYL has been the force behind the struggle for independence and for the union of the two territories – former British Somaliland and former Italian Somalia – which formed the Somali Republic on 1st of July 1960.

But unfortunately that is a wrong perception because independence with Italy as the Trusteeship Authority was against the principles of the genuine Somali Youth League leadership which opposed the return of an Italian Administration to Somalia in any form or guise.

The history of SYL is not that old. It is well within the life span of most of us, although all the founding fathers are no longer with us. The last of them, Ali Hassan Maslah, (Ali Verduro) passed away recently.

After the defeat of the Fascist Italy in the World War II, Britain, which was already controlling the Northern region of Somalia, also took over the Italian Somaliland.

Waxaan waligayba rumaysnaa sida uu qoraagu sheegay in SYL ay dhibtay Soomali u keentay ay ka badnayd faaiidada .

Waxa somalidu meel ay joogtaba ka muuqda fikir "hypocrisy"ah oo waxa afka laga sheegayo iyo ficilku isku lidi ah, tusaale waxaynu afka ka sheegnaa inaynu qabyaalada necebnahay Somalinimadana jecelnahay hadana ficilkeenu waa sidaa lidigeeda.

Sidaas oo kale SYL waxay ku dhawaaqayeen inay ka soo horjeedaan Italia hadana iyagaa dalbaday in la soo celiyo markii xarunta UN-ka ee Newyork fikirkooga lagu waydiiyay. Dhinaca kale SYL waxay ku doodayeen midnimo Somaliweyn hadana waxay diideen Ingriis oo ku baaqayay inuu Somali isu keeni doono haddii isaga loo daayo.

Waxa kale oo hubaal ah in SYL ay ka masuul ahayd in midnimaddii labada gobol ayna si fiican u dhaqan galin iyo in jamhuuriyaddii Somaliya ee dhalatay lixdankii ay diido inay saxeexdo xeerkii OAU ee ilaalinta xuduudaha uu gumaysigu ka tagay waayo qaranimada Somaliyeed waxay u doorteen inay ku dhisaan dhalasho (ethnicity) halkii uu qaranku ka yeelan lahaa xuduud cayiman (territorial integrity) taas oo sabab u noqotay colaad dhexmarta Somaliya iyo wadamadii dariska taas oo aakhirkii la odhan karo waa ta horseeday burburkii qaranimada iyo xasalooni la'aanta geeska Afrika.

SYL daneystiyaal Talyaani u adeegi jiray waaku jireen, however at the same time, dad dalkooda iyo dadkooda aad u jecelna wey ku jireen oo Soomaalida dhan wada midowdo rabtay. Maxamuud Xarbi ayaa ka mid ahaa. Cabdullaahi Ciise ayaa ka mid ahaa. Cabdirisaaq Xaaji Xuseen ayaa ka mid ahaa. And the 13 founders as well. Waa dadka ugu Soomaalida jeclaa dadkaan. They stood for a staunch Soomaalinimo, a united Soomaalis everywhere with unquestioned conviction.

Rabi ha u wada raxmado inta geeriyootay, abaalkooda haka siiyo. Kuwa noolna cimri dheer, cibaado suuban iyo caafimaad wanaagsan

If this is what you believe, why did you have a problem with me saying Cigaal AUN had a hand in the lingering NFD negotiations ending with MOU? So you must know it too.

^^How can the late cigaal sell you out when he didn't even control the Northern eastern province of Kenya it all came down to negotiations. Somali republic policies were all wrong in the sixties they should've focused on Kenya wage a war against Kenya instead of fighting against Ethiopia. Ethiopia was 2 decades a head of us at that time. When Haile Sellassie was re installed by the English in addis ababa after the second world war. The Ethiopians had enough time to get new arms from Moscow and France they had a capable army when we gained independence. The Somali republic should have invaded the north eastern province of Kenya in the early sixties. Kenya was a baby state at that time and the Somalis in the north eastern province were ready to fight besides the Somali army.

^War it was part of the deal. Somalia gives up its claim and he gets a little something in return. In effect, he sold us out so go elsewhere with your revisionism.

Well I wasn't there but I used to hear people talk about this. Back then I thought it was just a rumour until I came across an article talking about this which lead me to suspect the guy.

You are twisting it, I am saying he hindered Somali efforts when he was head of delegation in early 1960s in Kenya for several months and he was thrown out of the cabinet in the reshuffle. The reason this was telling is because he was the most prominent northern politician.

With which weapons should we have invaded, Germany was our biggest provider of equipment and it was for policing. The world didn't want to see a strong Somali state in the beginning, and when Somalia was able to defend itself in 1964 Kenya and Ethiopia united and signed a defence treaty.

We were a state with world respect, countries were emulating us, and it's all gone. You should be celebrating the Somali Republic.

So he was removed from his minister position because he was a Somalilander.

As for going to war we went to war with Ethiopia in 1964 even though it was a border dispute the same could easily be done against the Kenyans. The Somali republic at that time could easily defeat Kenya in an armed conflict and The Somali republic could get atleast 50% of the NFD as a compromise if it removed its troops from Somalia. I agree though the Somali armed forces had limited military weaponry providers. The Somali army became Military superior to its neighbors when General siad bare took over and the Somali republic became a socialist state.
