Because Mohammed is more than just a "prophet," he is a necessary partner to Allah. That is why the Shahada has two componenets - believe in Allah AND Mohammed. No Muslim will gain eternal salvation without first believing in Mohammed. You can't be a Muslim by believing in Allah alone.
