Force UN and Mahiga to move from Nairobi to Mogadishu

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia decided to move its core staff to Mogadishu after 17 years of operating from Nairobi, a genuine vote of confidence in the future of Somalia. Prime Minister Abdiweli personally lobbied UN's Ban Ki Moon to move the UN Political Office for Somalia from Nairobi to Mogadishu. "The move has been a key demand of the Somali government following the improvement of the security situation after the August 2011 retreat of the Al-Shabaab forces from the capital Mogadishu." Return of Public Building to Government Ministries

For the first time in 20 years, Somali ministries stopped sharing offices. On January 25th 2012, the government gave families illegally residing in former government buildings 12 days to clear the premises. After the expiry of the deadline, police and security forces began implementing a large scale operation to clear government property. Civil society organisations estimate that more than 10,000 illegal residents have been removed from government buildings so far. Public- and state-owned buildings that have been cleared include the National Theatre, the old Shabelle University campus, the clothing market, the Mogadishu Polytechnic Institute, the Banaadir region administrative headquarters, "The Mother's House", an administration building in Lido and the Somali Airlines building. Efforts are under way to clear several public schools and hospitals in the city." Sabahi Online

"In the past, most ministries used to share offices. No more. Every ministry was instructed to rebuild its office and use it after the property was returned" - Jaylani Noor Ikar, Minister of National Development
