Somaliland: Separatists assassinate Sool treasury – police

 

LAS ANOD — The regional treasury of Sool was killed when suspected pro-secession gunmen shot him on Thursday night in Las Anod, a security official said.

 

Mohamed Awil was in the business district when up to three gunmen suspected of belonging to an armed faction of the separatist Khaatumo Movement attacked him.

 

Mr. Awil was pronounced dead on the scene and the suspects fled the scene on foot even though police arrived immediately. Security forces told local media an investigation was already underway.

 

Efforts to contact senior officials in Las Anod for questioning were unsuccessful.

 

The violence on Thursday night came a day after unknown assailants hurled a hand grenade at the residential home of Las Anod’s new mayor, Mr. Farah Abdi Yare. The attack injured a police officer, who was rushed to a local hospital.

 

The latest surge in violence is believed to be linked to the recent agreement between President Ahmed Silanyo and former SSC militia leader, Suleiman Isse Ahmed ‘Hagaltosie’. Mr. Ahmed gave his pledge to disarm militia in Buhodle to President Silanyo during a meeting held in Dubai last month.

 

The move has reportedly angered an another faction based in Taleh, which is led by Somalia’s former Prime Minister, Ali Khalif Galeir.

 

Ahmed accused them of destabilising the region during his keynote address to Buhodle residents following his return from UAE at the end of July. It was just last week when he survived an attempt on his life after Khaatumo gunmen opened fire at him.

 

The former rebel leader recently turned a peacemaker and there are speculations he might be rewarded with a ministerial position in the Ahmed Silanyo government.

 

In a related development, General Ismael Mohamed Osman, the chief of the armed forces welcomed the recovery of two battle-wagons and a civilian vehicle on Wednesday. The General said members of the Khaatumo separatists ambushed the vehicles back in March but they were returned by deserted fighters from the group.

 

Khaatumo separatists are engaged in a violent confrontations with Somaliland forces in the southern region of Sool.

So you support this kind of cold blooded murder? May Allah's mercy be on the dead man's soul. This sort of terrorism will surely not be allowed to continue in Somaliland and the people of Sool will bring to justice the cowards behind this ugly crime. I suggest your lot come up with something different next time, may be a little more civilised tactics to win Sool's support.
