Carafaat Posted July 16, 2012 Police in Somaliland arrested King Osman Buur-madow after arriving at Hargeisa Airport on March 15, 2012. King Osman who is a prominent Somali traditional leader had disagreements with president Silanyo and some of his cabinet ministers. He has publicly criticised the actions and practices of some ministers of Kulmiye government accusing them of being extremists. The king also revealed gaffs in a trip that Somaliland government delegation claimed to have gone to China in 2011 while actually landing in Hon Kong instead, after they were denied entry to mainland China. King Osman was also arrested in the United Arab Emirates without any formal charges on his way back from the US. This King is known for his success in brokering the peace agreement in Puntland during the conflict between president Abdullahi Yusuf and his rival General Ade Muse in 2003. During this period Ade Muse and many of his supporters fled to the Eastern region of Somaliland where they were hosted until the peace agreement was signed with the late Abdullahi Yusuf . King Buurmadow also gained popularity when he participated in the Africa Kings conference hosted by the late Col. Gaddafi of Libya in Tripoli in Sept, 9 , 2009. King Buurmadow was sentenced to one year prison earlier this month for un-related presumed offence after the prosecuters failed to provide evidence aginst the case of the King . I am with freedom of speech and think that the kings’ only fault was criticising the current Kulmiye government of Somaliland. Keeping Buurnadow in prison by Somaliland authorities without proper judicial process is a stain in Somaliland political history and I advice the Somaliland government to immediately release the king before further damage is done to the democratic processes and the freedom of speech in the country.. Please support this cause and tell this young and emerging democracy in the volatile Horn of Africa to respect Human rights and freedom of speech inorder to progress towards full democracy and avoid the anarchy that is persistant in Somalia. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/334/094/876/free-traditional-king-buurmadow-from-prison-in-somaliland/ Sponsored by: Mohammed Ali Allgedo News Media Network allgedo@allgedo.com

The only problem I have with this burmadow biz is that they need to charge this man with some form of treason, if they don't have the laws for it let him go and pass the laws and let this guy go, take it as a lesson learned. He is not only treason, he is also damage rights and reputations of other persons including president and his families. He abuse freedom of expression. Freedom of expression is important for Somaliland. if we want to develop as democratic society we have to define our moral borders. As Muslim we have to protect the rights of other individuals, for their reputation, privacy, self esteem and we have to prohibit hate speech which can create Fitna in our society . In my opinion this court make clear that border.

In my opinion this court make clear that border. It's not a case of opinions, saaxib. The law should be above all of that and should only be concerned with guilt (or otherwise). If the SL government have no concerete evidence against this king then they should let him go. In fact, you should be one of the first to call for his release if at all you feel that the law applied here has not be adequate (regardless of your belief in the man's guilt or innocence). This is why lawyers defend murderers, child abusers or rapists. For unless there is a clear victim, enough evidence or even a rational case that may prove anyone's guilt, the courts should have no business in any political mudslinging and spinning. Of course, the Allgedo wailing there comes across as a form of "xaq yuraad bihi baatil" (truth used for dishonest motives) yet it still remains a truth. The king, the journalists or anyone within SL that does not agree with the goverment of the day should never be jailed on such filmsy motives and reasons. Or, at least, that's how a 'free' country should operate. Wax fahan.

I understand what you mean, freedom of expression should not be abused and one has to be responsible when your talking hate and defamation like this self proclaimed 'king'. Unlike Gulwaade Ngonge, I don't acknowledge any self-proclaimed 'kings' as such and I am not tryna plays devils advocate. What is best for our country is that we have a stronger justice system. Even if it is for smaller crimes like hate speech, defamation or libel and more important crimes like treason, we can pass the appropriate laws and enforce them in a relatively consistent and objective manner. If in the next few months for example we pass the appropriate laws to prosecute such crimes, it will put all the big mouths like this burmadow on notice after he is freed. People with a false sense of importance like this guy don't usually keep their mouth shut for very long, he will want to be in written about again and in the spotlight. Likely would end up right back where he is now except there would be the proper judicial process to address him and set a precedent for any other divas like him.
