Somali philosopher Posted July 5, 2012 I would like your opinions on which department of business I should study. Accounting, marketing, management, or finance/economics. I am thinking about going to university of Minnesota Though I havent done a lot of research I am leaning on economics
OdaySomali Posted July 5, 2012 Study economics. Make sure the degree is a Msc. and NOT a BA. Alernatively study a science subject e.g. Engeneering, pure sciences etc. In any case go for degrees that teach technical skills. leading to better chances of employability. Dont waste your time on Business, accounting, marketing and other such nonsense; you can get those skills by picking up a textbook, doing a masters or a one year top-up degree. Garnaqsi Posted July 5, 2012 I agree with the above post; the only really good subject you mentioned is economics.

The departments you mentioned each specialise in a particular aspect of the business world. Perhaps you should do research on each of the choices and see if you prefer one over the other. Bluelicious Posted July 5, 2012 I agree with Freeman. You should choose a course that your interested in and are passionate about and not because it's a popular course. You need to live your own life make your own choices don't let other people tell you how to live your life. Your more likely gonna be happy and succeed with your work if it's something your passionate about and love doing that's the real fact. I suggest you first find out what you're interested in and what you wanna do in the future and then do your research in courses. OdaySomali - You're not sharp today SP said University of Minnesota which is in The States.

Somali philosopher Posted July 5, 2012 I see what you mean about parents, my parents like all Somali parents would like to see me in a white coat. But I have never been interested in becoming a doctor. Even after shadowing doctors. Although I am very good at biology. I chose business field because it interests me most. In fact I have joined this forum after seeing a discussion on an economics article. I am most interested in Somalia and feel like my future skills would be beneficial there
DoctorKenney Posted July 5, 2012 Have you ever thought of studying Engineering and then doing your Masters in Business Administration? This would combine whats useful (Engineering) with what you enjoy (Business). Its a very competitive world out there and you need to make yourself stand out
Somali philosopher Posted July 5, 2012 ^^haven't considered engineering. i have friends of mine study engineering. especially petroleum engineering. they all transfered to another state since we dont have it in my state. but it only takes 4 years and pays very highly. by the way how long would it take to do my masters in business. Garnaqsi Posted July 5, 2012 Somali philosopher -- I don't understand why you're putting economics under the 'business field'. Maybe things work differently in the States, but over here in Britain a business degree is considered a doss subject while economics is considered a rigorous degree. The-freeman Posted July 5, 2012 Agreed Dr K-It is not always about money. One should study a subject that is personally fulfilling. We need Somalis to be doctors, engineers yes but we also need Philosophers, Anthropologist and particularly Psychologist as a sizeable chunk of our society are mental. International Relations- woop woop
