EDMONTON - Edmonton police say the suspect wanted in the murders of three security guards and the attempted murder of a fourth early Friday has a bulletproof vest and a "significant" amount of money, and is likely armed with a handgun.

On the second day of an intense manhunt, police have received no confirmed sightings or substantiated tips about where Travis Baumgartner, the 21-year-old man accused in the slayings of his co-workers, may be.

Baumgartner was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Michelle Shegelski, 26, Brian Ilesic, 35, and Eddie Rejano, 39. He is also charged with attempted murder in the shooting of another guard, Matthew Schuman, who remains critically injured in hospital.

All four victims shot were employees of G4S Cash Solutions, an armoured car company where Baumgartner had worked since April. They were shot while delivering money to cash machines at the University of Alberta's Hub Mall early on Friday morning. Baumgartner is missing, and is now the subject of an international search.

Speaking to reporters at the Edmonton police headquarters on Saturday, Supt. Bob Hassel urged any friends or acquaintances who have heard from Baumgartner to contact police or CrimeStoppers. He would not confirm that Baumgartner has been giving some of the stolen money to friends, and said police don't know whether anyone may be helping him while he is on the run.

"If anybody is (helping him) we sure would hope that they would give us a call and let us know," Hassel said. "We consider him armed. We consider him dangerous."

Police say they don't know whether Baumgartner is still in Edmonton, or even in the province or country. He said rural residents are being asked to look for anything unusual around their land and outbuildings.

Baumgartner's mother called on her son to surrender to police late Friday.

"I'm sorry that we had an argument last night and had bad words between us," the statement from Sandy Baumgartner read. "But I want you to come home and do the right thing. Let's work this out together."

She asked her son to surrender without further bloodshed and promised she would stand by him.

"You are not alone, Trav. Please, I love you and want to help you. Call police now and end this peacefully."

Police think the dark blue Ford F-150 pickup Baumgartner is driving now has the Alberta licence plate - CAA 636 - taken from his mother's vehicle.

Baumgartner is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Police advise anyone who encounters him to use extreme caution.

Supt. Bob Hassel also urged the 21-year-old to take responsibility for the situation and turn himself in.

Information about Baumgartner has been distributed internationally, including to border agencies, he said.

"Every police organization has a copy of your photo, your vehicle and are actively supporting us in this manhunt," said Hassel.
