^^There is no story here, as someone has previoulsy said with economic improvement comes an eduaction system and this, especially the education of women, will dramatically bring down the number of children women have. Our population have been stagnant for the past 30 years due to high motarlity rate for children under 5 plus our lifespan, which is around 48 yrs. So in a nutshell, many Somalis are dying before they rich the age of 5 and if they do reach that milestone, they will probably wont live to see 50.

somali fertility encompasses all the somali ethnic group where eva they live.You really can't separate somalia & somali ethnic group,they might have different boundaries but are all intertwined.If you look in Mogadishu In 80s or even Hargeisa today you find atleast 1/2 the population are from ethioia,jubouti,kenya etc. In the diaspora it doesn't matter which country you from.

 

Somali population ova all is put between 17 to 20 million and could be more.

That is still low population considering that total area [ 500,000 square miles] covers the areas of NFD, Somali region of Ethiopia and Somalia.[ the 2 Somalilands]. Our regions are one of the least populated in the World, comparing them to India and China is just a fallacy.

^^^ true.It's agriculture that sustains a larger population unless industrialized like the west.Most somali lands made a waste by pastoralism.,trees r cut & consumed by livestock.Could be managed but when?!

the only thing look forward to now is oil,minerals etc..hopefully that stabilize our future.

We have about 20000 square miles of arable land in Somalia, we probably only farm about 5% of it. We need to start forming cattle stations where feeds and water infrastructure are created in order to give a break to our grazing land and stop the unnecessary desertification.

 

What Somalia needs is permaculture.

We have more than enough arable land as it is and will have much more once irrigation projects are put in place. We also have a massive coast, yet most regions of Somalia don't Incorporate fish in to their diet, the cause of that may be economic reasons though as there is no viable way for fisherman to bring their catch to any inland markets (refrigeration, logistics etc.). So again, the demographics of our nation may be pose a problem in the future, but let's focus on properly managing our abundant.

 

My one fear for Somalia's resources can be seen in discussions pertaining to the ongoing oil exploration, there are those who have fallen for the false sense of prosperity in the emirates and wish to emulate it in Somalia, I personally think Iran is a much better example for Somalia in seeking a diverse and viable economy.

soomaalida kuwooda educated ah xitaa waa iska badow wali. i leave in kenya and even the lowest kikuyu knows it's unsustainable to have more than 2-3 kids. somalis on the other hand just pop out kids at astonishing rate, typical family is 7 to 8. as if they never had of family planning. waa dad iska socda without any contingency no insurance, no health benefits, no savings, no jobs etc. resources are finite and a little planning in our lives will not hurt. we should not welcome large families but discourage them.

We can even farm more than 80% of the country using rigs but the question is how to stabilize family planning til we reach that point.It's ok to have as many children as you want so long you can afford but fact is you see starving women with dozen kids on evening news.
