Aaliyah,

Abu-Salman basically said all I had intended to say, but I would add that there is a big gender misconception with regards to a son or daughter and their relation with a specific parent. To most boys the most stabilizing force in their lives are their mothers, not their fathers, and for daughters its usually the other way around. Therefore the absence of a specific parent can a affect a child in different ways.

A child that wants to be with his/her friends cannot be stopped forever unless the parents take drastic measures, and in the end that will only lead to that son or daughter running away from house. Therefore how can a father have quality time with a son that rather hangs with his mates? How can he make him stay at home, through force? There will be a time when the son grows stronger than the father, and then what? For some curfews don't work, in-fact it will only infuriate them as they get clowned by their peers, and that's really the biggest issue a teen faces -> peer-pressure; to get the same clothes, the same gadgets, etc in the easiest way possible.

This is why I believe a contemporary Somali culture that captures these teens through music, films, tv-shows and other popular mediums is desperately needed. Through that new Somali culture we could desseminate important Somali values such as respect for your elders, doing well at school, working hard for something, the beauty of our deen etc. None of that exists today, hence they are all caught up with what comes out of Hollywood and Defjam records.

Somali families at this moment can't really choose where to settle because they go were the jobs are. There are examples where Somali parents worked hard to their raise their sons well in one specific city for most of their lives only to see them killed in a different city because they went after jobs but instead got caught up in the local drug-trade(Alberta) and there are many examples where Somali parents did leave dangerous areas in cities like Atlanta and settled in smaller towns only for every other Somali family to settle there as well.(the flight from the civil-war is an even better example of our parents trying to give us a better chance at life)

Gentrification and strong community centers are better solutions which can be seen in Minnesota.

I think you've all brought great and valid points. Poverty is a huge problem for our community, though maybe the Europeans and Americans fare better than those of us in the UK. This brings with it, parents inability to meet their children's material needs, pay for extra curricular activities which provide a focus, excitement and build the confidence and skills of their children at the most basic level, but more crucially, it is poverty, not choice or neglect that that forces many Somalis to live in the areas riddled with crime and access only to worst schools in the nation, these are all factors which influence the child's socialisation. Lets not get started on racism in Britain (perhaps, also in America) and the discourse on black masculinity which our boys exposed to from a very young age.

As Chimera, we're in dire need of community initiatives targeting all of these issues, I would also add Islamic education which is friendly and none judgmental.

That's not what I hear. For the most part, the American Somalilanders (I hate the twin cities, so outside of that city) and the Canadians as well are all accomplished folks, who own businesses. They integrate well to the American society without losing their identity. All the lousy ones that return to Somaliland just happen to be British.

I'd say unemployment for Canadian and American Somalis is much lower than their European counterparts, but the Somali youth in North America tend to be involved in more serious crimes for some reason. I don't even run with rough crowd or have many Somali friends, but I can name at least five guys off the top of my head who have either been shot or stabbed at some point.

Aaliyyah

Chimera,

I simply meant if the parents play an important role in developing the child's intellect during childhood which is a critical period then that child will develop respect for his parents. Hence, when it comes to the teenage years he will develop restraint in regards with the activities he does with his peers because of the respect he holds for his parents. Quite frankly, he will be a mature person due to how they raised him.

Other than that, I agree with you when it comes to the need for somali culture and community centres.

Chimera walaalo, i really like how ur stressing the need for a contemporary Somali culture that can supplant the value less and ghetto way of life that beckons to our youth. It is truly a battle for hearts and minds, and unfortunately many parents send their children to the masaajid hoping that religion will be a panacea for all their problems, without even giving a second thought to the importance of culture. Dont get me wrong islam should be central in these kids lives, for in it lies their salvation, but theres no denying that Islam on its own does not form a complete identity. I know countless youth who became religious mashaAllah, but as soon they weaken a bit in their iimaan, geuss which channel suddenly becomes a fixture in their tv screens? BET. Geuss who they start hanging out with? Their former drug dealing friends. If their parents had immersed them in Somali culture and values, such a degenerate and lowly sub culture originating from the ghettoes of America would not look as enticing regardless of how religious these youth are at the moment, because the dhaqan would serve as an effective buffer. A dual islamo-somali identity is the strongest innoculation against youthful waywardness and vice.
