Lasqoray, Somalia — Mohamed Said Nur, Governor of Sanaag region gave a stark warning to the Somaliland government, that Puntland will protect its people from attacks by the breakaway region, Radio Garowe reports.

Governor Nur who held a press conference while visiting Bossaso, said that the attack by Somaliland naval forces on engineers visiting the port city of Lasqoray on Friday, was a blatant attempt to incite confrontation by the Somaliland government.

"We are asking those who are committing these attacks for whatever reason to stop, Lasqoray is not a contested area and any attacks on its people or administration will not be allowed," said Governor Nur.

The Governor added that if the attacks by the Somaliland government cease to stop, that the Puntland administration in Lasqoray will be forced to defend itself.

On Friday, Somaliland naval forces attacked a crew of engineers assessing the possible renovation of the Lasqoray port.Puntland forces escorting the crew fended off the attack. Lasqoray a port town in Sanaag region, a contested region by Puntland and Somalialnd located in northern Somalia, is under the jurisdiction of Puntland.

Puntland's Deputy Minister of Security, Abdijamal Osman Mohamed on Saturday requested that Somaliland stop the reoccurring attacks and disregard for Puntland constituencies. "We are asking our brothers of Somaliland to stay away from disrupting the port of Lasqoray and other constituencies under our jurisdiction and whose people fully support the Puntland government," said Minister Mohamed.

The Somaliland government has yet to respond to the statements made by Minister Mohamed and Governor Nur.
