N.O.R.F Posted June 4, 2012 Does the lack of a modern Somali dress code bother you? We’re stuck between the west and Arabia when it comes to normal every day wear. This isn’t too bad if what you wear doesn’t look off key. Living in the cosmopolitan place that is Dubay you come across so many people from so many places. The Arabs have their thowbes/khandooras/dish dhashers, the Shalwaar khamis is worn by the Pakistanis/Indians and of course the business suit is there for everyone. When out and about in the usual Somali populated areas, you will see what I’m talking about. Shaadh iyo Surwaal balaadhan with sandals! Nothing wrong with it but everything wrong with at the same time.
Carafaat Posted June 4, 2012 Norf, I was thinking the same thing last weekend. We are one of the most creative people. Yet, when it comes to specially male clothes, we have a horrible taste. We should be able to make and market own Nomadic Somali Style.

Carafaat Posted June 4, 2012 Norf, in case you want to organise the first Somali Nomadic Fashion week. Check the Swahilli Fashion week as example. http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=indian+ocean+fashion+zanzibar&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1680&bih=894&wrapid=tlif133882266519210&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=EdDMT_GaGcLb0QW96qzEAQ#um=1&hl=nl&biw=1680&bih=894&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Q9DMT9ivFOTF0QWMrIDGAQ&ved=0CAUQvwUoAQ&q=swahili+fashion&spell=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=da764bf54d820f42

Abu-Salman Posted June 4, 2012 Well, we were used to C&A etc clothing bought in Paris by hooyo mainly as children; later, when in France, the "soldes" in January/July made the Armand Thierry or Springfield accessible (one thing I liked about France). The Yves Dorsay chemises were even sold at few euros the piece at the local Carrefour last time a whole package was sent to everyone (they cost much more back home and the Benetton was then more or less the sole decent men clothes shop in Djibouti). I always thought authentic quality outfits will make a good business opp (YSL chemises were at great Discount in Sports Direct at around £5 as luxury markets were hurt by recession). These were the kind discounted at Carrefour: http://www.yvesdorsey.com/fr/product/chemises/ PS: I believe in macawis/tee-shirts at home/xaafad (shared with the bros and cousins of course...as with everything else). Viva simplicity and African socialism.

The safari suit can actually look smart if worn right. The problem is Somalis have tried to turn a normal double layered suit blazer into a safari suit shirt. It just doesn't work (above pic case in point). Here:
